  • OLD cleveland crash photo

Anyone know what is being pictured here? Old photo taken by my Grandfather at the cleveland air races. I would guess the Beguine incident but the back of the photo says 1947.

Woody Edmondson crashed his #15 P-51A on the 11th lap of the 1947 Thompson.

Couldn't be Beguine anyway, as it hit a house when Odom went down. I see nothing of that nature in this pic.

        maybe this one ?

Thompson 1947...Jack Hardwick...P-51C...engine failed on first lap...bellied-in...wreckage burned...but JH got out OK..

        quote from airrace.com

"As the field turned home pylon the engine in Jack Hardwick's P-51-C exploded. Looking for a clearing to set the plane down on he spotted a small field, but the folks on the ground rushed in the same direction causing Jack to divert into some trees. The impact was spectacular with pieces flying in all directions.

Fortunately spectators pulled him uninjured from the wreckage before fire engulfed the scene."

Perhaps. I DO see trees in the background.
