  • OT - R/C Airshow this weekend (July 7 & 8) in Bay Area

For those in the San Francisco Bay Area, our R/C club's annual airshow is this weekend (July 7th & 8th). Lots of cool stuff to see. Free show and open to the public. Great opportunity to fine tune those camera skills or enjoy a day of aviation.

I went to the RC airshow today. I got more than expected.

It was an impressive show, complete with gliders, helicopters, weird things like a flying stop sign, and even Snoopy flying his doghouse while fighting the Red Baron!

I arrived a bit late, and was still in the parking lot when a nicely detailed Piper Cub-like aircraft with a realistically-looking pilot took off, leaving me to think "that's one GIANT scale model!...1/2 scale or greater maybe"? The lightweight craft looked like it was barely moving in the sky.

Then it started circling the field behind us. It was then that I realized that this was a real, full-size aircraft! Apparently this is one of the few that can get down and up on the RC field's 150 foot runway (the healthy headwind blowing today helped, I'm sure). Now THAT was different.

It resembled a Cub down to the yellow fabric, but could have been a modern LSA machine. Following not far behind was San Jose's latest and beautiful-looking Police helicopter, a photo of which is seen below:

Finally after a few passes the full-scale planes left and they got back to model flying.

The highlight was a turbojet-powered F-16 Falcon, the first turbine-powered model I have ever personally witnessed. Painted in a Thunderbirds scheme, it almost looked and sounded like the real thing in flight. Only the landing brought me back to reality when it slowly drifted and bounced very un-F16-like to a stop, tipping on one wingtip at the last instant before setting back onto it's gear. Pretty impressive nonetheless.

Here's a video from a flight cam mounted to the jet. I may go back tomorrow if I can:

Glad you were able to make it. Yours truly was piloting the F-16. Should be basically the same show tomorrow, minus the full scale visitors.

The runway is actually 520ft, so the Zlin Savage Cub was able to get in and out pretty easily with the headwind.

2100+ people out there today, so it was a busy day for the small field.

So that was you on the sticks for the Falcon? Very nice work my friend.

I've found your nose and tail cam videos, but do you have any footage of it shot from the ground to share? It's an impressive machine.

Meanwhile, I found footage of the full size "cub" posing as an RC aircraft during a previous year's performance for other AAFO members to view:

Yeah, I was doing pilot duty for the weird and fast stuff. Flying doghouse, lawnmower and the F-16. I don't have any external footage that I know of on the F-16. The onboard video really gives perspective of speed though!

Shot a nice sunset flight with the F-16 after Saturday's show.

Hate to tell you this, but that's NOT a Piper Cub..........also, better to use the first half of the runway for landings instead of the second half........looks like if he had gone a few feet further, he would have had a nice burm to go over. I wonder if the flight school that owns the airplane knew he was landing off field.......I doubt the insurance would have covered that. Looks like a great airshow though, will try to make it next year.
