  • Turbine Legacy

    Hey Guys,

Last year's winner of the Mojave Experimental Flyin Experimenter of the year trophy Mike Patey is at it again. This time putting a PT-6 on a new highly modified Lancair Legacy. The program is aggressive both in schedule and in engineering, and we are psyched to watch.

    Check it out!

Will he be able to run for the records he broke last year or was that piston powered only?

Piston is a different class from turbine is a different class from turbo prop.

Which means a whole new group of records to go for!!

      Get psyched!

I guess it's safe to assume that this Turbulence will have the carbon-fiber wrap for the tail for the extra speed/loads.

              very cool!

The whole airplane is wrapped with several plies.

I can't help but wonder if a guy with this much energy, time and coinage is interested in the Unlimited Class...?

because for some people, aviation doesn't begin and end with warbirds...

                        Hi Todd,

If your post was in reply to mine, who said anything about warbirds? I was wondering if a guy with a Lyc 780 powered Legacy who then moves to a turbine Legacy might find a way to do a new composite Unlimited (composites are where his experience is, eh?)? Or something along those lines anyway.

I enjoy the Sport Class - if I had the coinage, I'd be there myself.

                        Blue skies, Chris

without going in the twin engine direction, what engine are you going to use to propel an airframe that meets the 4,000lb limit?
sorry, but I just assumed a warbird or a warbird power plant.
If it isn't intended to race then your options are better.
this being a racing forum, that's the first thing that came to mind.

                            Todd, thanks for the reply.

You wrote, "without going in the twin engine direction" and actually, that's just what I was wondering about (that's a bad fault of mine, I daydream about air racers and air racing quite a bit). Would a twin engine version of the Legacy (a la Twin Mustang P-82) be capable of over 400 mph? Let's see - two turbo'ed 780s, extend the tail cone length and tail size to get more tail volume... Would a twin weigh enough?

Ah, nevermind. It won't happen, but that's the kind of thing that I wonder about.

It does intrigue me to see a guy like Mike Patey go "gonzo" on yet another project. That is, a Lyc 780 powered Legacy wasn't enough!? So that got me to wondering about the project after the turbine Legacy.

it is good that someone has money to spend on airplanes... if I did it wouldn't be a twin, but something similar to a gp-5 but a big enough airframe to handle a big block chev with massive boost...
