  • A Wingman quiz

Haven't done one of these for a while, but I discovered this old slide and thought I'd put it up.

So name the year and the players, and tell us who finally took the Championship. Note that there are 4 airplanes in the shot, with one kind of blending into the background.

Brad excluded for the moment, though if he can come up with what heat this is it would be appreciated. This was a long time ago and I have no idea.

I reckon that's a start. If it helps, the aircraft running so rich up at the top is Clay Klabo's Mustang. I see the markings didn't come through on this low res version of the picture, so I thought I'd throw that in.

'76 or '77. All three of the known aircraft are in both gold races those years. Don't know who is down low there. I was only 3yo in '76.

Lord -- just a kid! Down low is the other half of the Red Baron Racing Team. The altitude of the low airplane is a major clue for anybody old enough to have been watching racing in the 1960s and 1970s. There is also a major color clue here for people who follow the history of those times.

The racer down low looks like Lefty's "Thunderbird".. At the time wasn't the other Red Baron plane Flying Undertaker?

There's one lower than Lefty there, Leo.

I'll say its DG in the Flying Undertaker in 1976 and Lefty wins the championship in Thunderbird.

                  Correct!

Darryl was always known for being quite comfortable down low, as well as holding a bank on the straights longer than other pilots. It was a distinctive style for the time.

The color clue is that by 1977 when Darryl flew RB, the wings were painted white.

Total guesses here - one of the Mazala brothers or maybe S Hinton? Did George Roberts race this too- can't remember?

                        The year was 1979

                        The planes are:

                        #5 Red Baron
                        #85 Iron Mistress
                        # 25 Thunderbird
                        #9 Cloud Dancers

The qualifying pilot for the "Flying Undertaker" that year was John Muszala

Hay - Wingman when are you and your wife coming back to Reno. Some of us old timer IF1 guys miss-seeing both of you.

                          Re: A Wingman quiz

The fourth airplane (down at the bottom) is actually The Flying Undertaker, I think, flown by Darryl. So would qualifying the Undertaker have been John's first time on the Reno race course? As far as I know neither Steve Hinton nor Jim Maloney had been on the course at that time.

You know, I'd been wondering what it would be like to walk into the Formula One hangar at this point. Five years ago we knew most everybody, and were even doing rookie profiles at PRS for Lista and the Formula Forum. The IF1 hangar was a second home. These days I look at the entry list, or pictures of the Hangar, and feel like I don't know anybody any more. Seems like we'd be strangers in there.

                          Thanks for thinking of us...

                            Neal,
Funny how you mentioned not knowing anyone in the F1 hanger. Several years ago, after we retired from racing, Patricia and I walked through the F1 hanger one late afternoon, when all the F1 “go fast” overnight mods were normally being done..... We walked up to a guy that was working on an induction lip on the cowl. I mentioned, “you know if you round the lips very generously, they will work better”. The worker, maybe the plane owner, maybe thr pilot or a crew member looked up at me and said “What the “F.... do you know”. I said nothing and walked off. We had walked about 20 feet, when someone came up, Oh Mr. Sharp Mr. Sharp, I’m so sorry, please come and tell me how to speed up my plane. I asked him, where are you running now. He said bottom Silver.... I said, “Sounds like you’ve got it ALL figured out, you don’t need my help” and continued walking. So.... Not only do we not know anyone, they don’t know anyone either. Don’t miss going to Reno. Amazing, it certainly is "what have you done for us lately....."
Really miss the people from all the years, but that’s it. We have many friends from 30+ years of racing every Sept. You And Brigitta, are some that we miss most!

Hello Jon and Trish. It's nice to know we are remembered. In general I don't miss Reno too much, and Birgitta is really quite happy that we are no longer so involved. It took up a lot of each year and she in particular would really rather be wandering the desert than inhaling the fumes at the Races. Racing has been a great experience, and I value every minute I devoted to it all those years, but it was time to move on...
