  • PHEW!

Monitoring system for the server failed me... didn't get on the site for a day and a half due to two visits to doctors that had me, sort of, down for the count.. anyway..

    Long story short..

Partition on the server filled up, making no more room for what needed to go in there.. found it, fixed it.. we're back.

Sorry for the outage.. don't hesitate to email me if you guys notice things down!

    Re: PHEW!

Thanks, Wayne! I hope all is well with you. I get an odd, sick feeling anytime this site is down because it reminds me of that terrible Friday evening when you had to shut it down.

I've pledged to keep the site alive even after I pass (not that this is in the cards, as I know them currently!) so not to worry...

I do remember that day and will forever. I wear the hat given to me by the pilot as often as possible!

        Re: PHEW!

I did manage to track down what happened.. boring stuff but, just in case anyone's interested.. Either I or someone who has access to do it, created a test email account on a domain hosted on the server, unfortunately, the password was probably 12345 and the account SHOULD have been deleted immediately after the test was done. Long story short, SPAMMERS managed to use that account to send MILLIONS of emails. The bounces and their notices completely choked the small partition on the server main drive that is used as a working space for many functions on the box.. most notably MYSQL, the database program that runs this message board, as well as a couple sites on the box as well.

REALLY had to prang my brain into Linux mode to get to the bottom and delete the MILLIONS of bounces...

Server administration has never been anything less than a hair puller for me, in the current day and age with hackers able to get into extremely well protected systems, the task will only cause me to lose more hair.. luckily, I seem to have managed to keep most of mine! Cept for where the radiation burnt it all off on the back of my neck/scalp... Can you say MOE hairline??

            Re: PHEW!

I've had my personal computer hijacked twice over the years, culminating in my local provider killing my account to save themselves. Incredible numbers of e-mails generated.
It's cost me software, hardware, lost files...
We got hit at the office a while back and before we stopped it a virus had encrypted most of our drawing files. It took days to get things back to normal.
Better protection has kept it from happening for the last several years.

Personally, the hackers should be hung by their tender parts and flogged...
