Just saw video of the accident............appears they are in formation and maybe doing a crossover break...........one of them continues to descend while make a steep turn..........strange!!........only thing I can come up with is, if there was a midair resulting in damage sufficent enough to a loss of control to the accident aircraft but not effecting the other/s. That's pure specultion on my part though. Certainly didn't appear to be any maneuver that would cause a loss of control.

Very sad....the evening news said he was too low to "eject". Do any L39s have hot seats? No good video on the news.... someone said they thought he tried to turn too tight...indicating that it could have been an accelerated manuver stall...but its all guessing right now.....

        Some details on the pilot:

Glenn Smith left a lucrative job at a Dallas-area technology firm for an early retirement of restoring Soviet fighter jets and flying to exhibitions across the country.

He died Saturday when his nearly 30-year-old training plane nosedived during an air show in eastern Iowa and crashed into a field, authorities said. Spectators watched the 59-year-old Smith's plane erupt into flames, followed by a cloud of gray smoke. Nobody on the ground was hurt.

Smith had been flying in formation with other members of the HopperFlight team at the Quad-City Air Show in Davenport.

Smith did not make a mayday call or suggest any sign of distress before the crash, according to Sauer and Randy Ball, a good friend of Smith's.
Ball said Smith was a meticulous flier who would map every step of a flight plan beforehand.

"They practiced the day before and everything went fine," Ball said.

Smith was a longtime technology entrepreneur whose company was acquired by Tyler Technologies, a Dallas-based company that develops software for local schools and government clients, in 1998. He remained an executive at Tyler until 2006, the company said in a statement.

After retirement, Smith focused on collecting and flying vintage planes. He kept two rare Soviet MiG-17 fighter jets at the Historic Aviation Memorial Museum in Tyler, about 90 miles east of Dallas, museum president Carolyn Verver said.

I have to agree with Chris. In the video, it looks like the pilot was certainly high enough to punch out. So any damage to the aircraft significantly enough to induce a loss of control would have necesitated an ejection. I'm sure the pilot was professional enough to know that. However, a high G turn might have induced an accelerated manuver stall that the pilot might have thought he could recover. Only speculation.

Bottom line is, it's very sad news and I seriously feel for the family. I've lost family members, but never in the public eye where people can replay the event on YouTube or the evening news. I can't imagine how painfull an already debilitating event must be under those circumstances. My heart goes out to them.

Few L39's in the U.S. have hot seats. The main reason many people don't keep them hot is the cost, and the fact that the safe flight envelope of that seat is very small. Ejection from straight and level, or a climb and your in good shape. But when you add any amount of bank angle, and a decent, the safe window takes way more then you would think. He probably would have had to commit to an ejection the second they broke formation.

An accelerated stall is possible, much like the Wild Child crash. But he doesn't seem to try and roll it out. You know the saying, "When in doubt, roll it out." Meaning, don't pull G's while trying to roll, wings level first, then pull.

Could it have been jet wash induced ?

Wow. I had no idea there was anyone in this country that could even service this seat.
This is particularly depressing for this group that saw that terrible accident at Reno 2007. Is it me or has there been an inornate number of L-39 accidents in this country compared with the number of L-39s in the US? When I saw this on TV, my mind flashed to the Blue Angle crash a few years ago when a guy pulled the stick too hard trying to catch up to the formation.....tear falls.....

Also the Red Arrows crash last year.
The degree of the change of direction seems to indicate a hard pull.

I keep hoping another video from a different aspect will surface......someone sitting outside their car on a side road who didnt want to pay to get in......on my way to Oshkosh this year the Blues were preforming at Sioux Falls so I got off the interstate and found a side road to watch them from.....I have done this sort of thing many times and the view of course is much different.....

Here is a video of the accident. The planes are very small so it's hard to see what happened. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=2f6_1346612653

There are some similarities with this accident...pulling too hard and possibly stalling; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZ--v...eature=related
