  • Surfing The Fence

They call this crazy act "Surfing The Fence" at St. Maarten island, and this video shows one reason why this is not the most clever thing one could do there while on vacation .

It certainly DOES gives one an idea of the power of these winged beasts though:

Wow! That's a bit more blast than the prop-wash I used to experience from the R-2800's on the Convair 340's when I was a kid. I guess we've come a long way (in the poweplant arena, not the intelligence part).

Indeed. Please note that the young lady was not seriously injured, but has a nice scab to remind her of her 'adventure'.

The biggest blast I ever felt was from a Lear at Stead in the mid-80's that was giving rides to paying passengers back up to Lake Tahoe after the races were over for the day. It was just turning around to head out to the runway when I received a face full of grit and kerosene fumes as I was doing my own version of fence-surfing (actually just watching from behind the low chain-link fence in front of the grandstands). Dunno if it was one of Lacy's jets or not, but it could have been.

Imagine doing that kind of activity behind one of the big jumbos. It takes a small hurricane to get one of those 747s moving, as shown in this jet thrust demonstration created at San Francisco International as a training film:

When I was 9 years old I got to go to the Abbotsford airshow that also happened to be in conjunction with the Worlds Exposition in Vancouver that year. The path way from the eastern gate into the show happened to pass right behind runway 19. A Concord happened to be doing its run up there a moment before my dad and I were walking past. About the time I was directly behind the Concord, they firewalled the throttles and the thrust blew me on my butt. I was quite literally blown away. I also thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Got blown away by the Bear once...not because of wind blast, but rather the fine coating of oil I received standing behind it during start up.
                    No pixels were harmed, honest.

At Oshkosh, I like to stand behind the P-51s as they start up and taxi away (to give rides) in the warbird area.....but those people on the beach are drunk or crazy or both....I am suprised they dont try to throw tennis balls into the landing planes' engines.....
