    As in going German ME-163 Komet rocket plane-fast?



    Description: The Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet, designed by Alexander Lippisch, was a German rocket-powered fighter aircraft. It is the only rocket-powered fighter aircraft ever to have been operational. Its design was revolutionary, and the Me 163 was capable of performance unrivaled at the time. Messerschmitt test pilot Rudy Opitz in 1944 reached 1,123 km/h (698 mph).

    Methanol and pure peroxide is the fuel, not hard to get at all. Just be really really careful with the pure peroxide or it will disolve you.

      Let me know when. I want to be there (at an appropriate distance...with binoculars) the first time you fuel it up.

        --> T-Stoff: 80% concentrated hydrogen peroxide / 20% oxyquinoline, used as hypergolic oxidizer with C-Stoff

        So true about the hydrogen peroxide. I have an old video from Armadillo Aerospace years back where they poured some on various types of clothing as an experiment.

        The synthetic garments did little, but the (organic) leather shoes burst into flames after about a minute.

          No..., not official* but based on the accounts of a Luftwaffe test pilot and subsequent damage to his test Me-163, a VERY good possibility this was the first aircraft to break the sound barrier in April of 1945.

            There is a replica flying as a towed glider. I'd like to see them put a rubber composite motor in it like Rutan is using and let it rip.

                Wow. A little hard to tell from the video, but that thing must have pretty impressive glide ratio. Is that a smoke generator poking out the back or just a fake rocket nozzle?

                    I'm seeing numbers running from 15:1 to 20:1 for glide ratios.
