RECORD SETTING RENO AIR RACER ATTEMPTS TO SET TIME TO CLIMB WORLD RECORD

On February 28, 2012, record setting air race pilot Will Whiteside will attempt to set the Time to Climb Aviation World Record for fastest time from a standing start on the runway to 3,000 meters (approximately 10,000 feet).
With clear weather, the attempt will take place at Santa Rosa Airport (KSTS) in Northern California. Progress and development in aviation has been driven in the past by similar milestones. The current record of 3:33 was set in 1978 by Russell H. Hancock in a Piper Navajo Panther. The record has to be broken by 1% and could be a challenging task for Whiteside's Russian air race plane named "SteadFast", which falls into the same category as Hancock's did. Whiteside is a Veteran Reno Unlimited air racer who is known for racing a highly modified P-51 called "Voodoo" and in October, 2011 set a world record for the 3 Kilometer world aviation speed record at Wendover, Utah in his Russian Yakovlev 3.

    Good luck, Will.

If he breaks it, he'll be like "Lyle, jr."...as Lyle has held the "unrestricted" time to climb and 3km records at the same time for almost 25 years now.

I just got word from Will that they smashed this record as well, old time was 3:33 and they did it in 2:05. He said they set 4 records in the process, official press release to come later.
                Great job team SteadFast!!!!

How are the "classes" arranged that has Will's Yak in the same class as a twin Piper? Is it based on total displacement, AC weight or something else?
