  • 232 "September Fury" Tailwheel Question

I watched who knows how many videos of qualifying from this year's races and have viewed countless photos, and what keeps catching my eye is that during "Hoot" Gibson's qualifying lap, September Fury's tailwheel doors were open and the wheel was hanging out. I'm wondering if it was a goof that was unnoticed until after, or if it was a measure taken for unknown reasons. Anyone have any information on that one?

It was an oops. Probably a little out on the rigging. It did that a couple of times when Mike Brown was racing it too. A little adjustment and it's back to normal.

I think the bigger oops was that no one on the team informed him that he was smoking like hell after he pulled off the course, he flew for a long time on that BAD engine, we all watched from the race trailer waiting to hear him call a mayday but........

Was his tail wheel door open, or his fly?

At least now we know where to "kick" it to get a few extra miles-per-hour ( or is that Miles-Per-Ouch!)...

I think those might be a legacy from the Mike Brown days. I seem to recall seeing a pic with the "huevos" hanging from the tailwheel from when he was racing SF.

If Hoot was hauling around in that thing with a hurt motor, they oughta switch 'em out for brass....
