I've noticed that the reporting from Channel 4 is tending to be more sensational and negative. They're probably pulling folks whose views are in line with theirs.

Did something change with this? The Channel 4 poll now says:
Do you think the Reno Air Races should continue in future years?
Yes (35.1%)
No (63.5%)
Undecided (1.4%)

"No" would be against future races . . .

Exactly, that's the problem. The KTVN Channel 2 poll is decidely in favor of continuing, while this one isn't.

That's my fault. It was supposed to say "Not in our favor" but I screwed up. Is there a moderator that can fix it?

I've posted information about the polls on the "Keep the Reno Air Races Alive" facebook page. Hopefully that will get us another couple thousand votes.

I know there's another flying forum out there. I think it's called the Warbird Information... something or other. Any members here also members there?

Just an FYI here,

When you hotlink to a poll like that the webmaster of the site that the poll is on can see where incoming page views are coming from and make it so votes directed from that URL are not counted.

You should always leave links to polls cold.

I did of course vote.

New here, I voted YES and sent out a few emails to my fellow aviation junkies. There is also a facebook group that started the day of the accident called Cancel the Reno Air Races FOREVER.

We need to get the hotels, Casino's and Reno Chamber of Commerce.....the BIG money on our side.
No we don't gamble too much but we fill the hotels with good people who are going to spend money.
Reno is not in great shape, we need their support but they also need us.
Time to come together !:bullhorn:

It is going to take big money to make it happen next year. There is something that I have not seen posted yet here that is VERY crucial to the event moving forward next year.

The vendors.

I know for a fact there is one vendor that lost $50k and another that lost $125K from food that was purchased and prepared for Saturday and Sunday. According to the urinal (RGJ) the air races lost $90k last year and this year they lost the two biggest revenue days. This was the first year in a long time that there was really no major competition for the weekend (Nevada home game).

There are vendors that make their year at the Air Races. I feel for them as well. This event impacted their income potential and their lively hood. Tough all around! I hope that come next year the vendors are around to support the air races as well.

I'm saying this to get back to the good feelings of friendly competition...Gosh guys... I need some more moderators to help me "prune" messages like this into the other threads that have subjects more in-line....

OR... I need to set the permissions up better so existing mods can make the changes! (likely, both)

Sanda, at least over the weekend, it was Ch 4 that was the least sensational, and more balanced. Ch 8, KOLO were the real OFFENDERS. Everything was negative, and sensational. They used our interview w/o obtaining permission. We made them remove that from their coverage, and an apology was made. Since then we have denied their request for that footage.

Irresponsible reporting can only be met with one thing....Don't Watch! If their viewer numbers go down, they will be forced to change their methods.

I realize this crosses over into the "media responsibility" thread, but the two subjects are very close here.

Hey Jeff. :)

I agree, over the weekend the live reporting was much better on Channel 4. My comment was a reaction to their website, which wasn't nearly so balanced, unfortunately. As is to be expected, the media's attention is already turning elsewhere - at least until Friday.

If you want to send a message to a media outlet, talk to the advertisers.. Tell them you aren't watching that outlet because they screw up too much (over sensationalize, misrepre, and hence won't see the advertising. Have to hit them in the pocketbook.

Also emailed our hotel tonight, told them enjoyed their services and hope the business community will band together to keep the Races going so that we may come back!

Also told officers we meet at the Riverside park last Saturday that we have always known the risks and hoped that we would be returning! (they hoped we would also, said we were a low maintenance group hehe)

And the waitress in the restaurant, that we hoped to see her when we returned to Races next year

We tried to tell everyone we could before we left Reno Sunday that we wished to return! Still telling anyone who will listen!

Matt,

On the advertisers thought, you're exactly right. But let's not slip into the same negative area as the media we're complaining about. Find a way to make it positive and tell the advertisers of the station doing the good job, that you will keep watching them and why.

I've worked in small to medium size TV markets and that's a great way to have your message heard. When a "car dealer-grocery-pharmacy-restaurant" hears from its patrons that one station clearly does a better job than the other, that does make its way back to the station management.

Voting with one's pocketbook, with some well placed comments can do a world of good.

I absolutely like your thinking, and agree, Jeff.. Spend more time/effort reinforcing the good behavior than trying to discourage the bad.
