  • The Heavenly Race

I thought this is nice but, should be separate. If members feel this is not cool, please, please, please remove and I will completely understand. We will all be there for this race with the GG 11 as our Grand Marshal's.

Lyle can race the Super Corsair
    “Mac” McClain in the RB-51
    Bill Speers in Pegasus
Gary Levitz in Miss A II
Rick Brickert in the Pond Racer
John Sandburg in Tsunami and now
    Jimmy in GG.
    Ken Burnstine in Susie Q
    Bud Fountain in his bearcat
    Earl Ketchen in Habu
Jimmy Doolittle in anything he touched.
    Bill Odom in Beguine

That's an interesting thought. I think it's OK to post it.

But isn't the former Pegasus still "with" us? IIRC, Pegasus became Voodoo Chile, now Voodoo. Bill Speer passed away in his "other" plane (as I recall).

Some one, please correct me if I'm in error.

      Re: The Heavenly Race

I think it's great, but we need to add some names

      John Crocker
      Lefty Gardner
      Jack Sliker - Escape II
      Bob Love
      Lloyd Hamilton
      Jim Maloney

I know there are others I'm forgetting.

      What about crew?

He may be at the the back of the pack but I would like to see Jim Wright in the H-1 Racer out there as well.

I knew I was forgetting someone. He was a good guy. My dad crewed for him on #5 when it was Rotofinish.

Thought I'd put this pic up for you.

Well I'm going to add Al Goss in "Warlock" He did fly a P51 more than once but not racing. He will have fun chasing all rest of them in his SNJ-5.

Not that PapaGoss wasn't to a certain degree, but all the Type A personalities above will blowup trying to win. Al would play the proverbial turtle and walk away with the golden trophy and special winged yellow jacket.

Doolittle HAS to be flying a Gee Bee. That, or a B-25!

Does anyone other than me remember the "race" in Lincoln, California? What was that, 1974-75? Hysterically funny watching the two bombers race.

When I first posted this in another thread, I was going for race pilots and planes that have "passed on". I do stand corrected that Bill Speers was flying Deja Vu, not Pegasus.

And yes it is important we remember all those who lost their lives doing what they loved. And yes there are many more than my original quote.

                        John Crocker

                        Jim Maloney
                        Al Goss

and surely more I have not listed. All deserve to be on the, Heavenly Air Racing team.

Are you kidding? They'd arm wrestle one another for a spot. lol

Crocker was best man at my wedding. Levitz looked at my boys the first year I brought them out and said, "Boy, could I tell you some stories about your mother!" For obvious reasons, I didn't let him. lol Rick Brickert introduced me to "carrier landings." I miss them all so much.

That's right, Shawn, I remember you telling me that. Do you remember who won that race?
