  • Are they really using NOS?

I've read much about boost systems like ADI at Unlimiteds, but is it really practicable to use risky () NOS injection as declared for example on Rare Bear homepage?

    thx

As far as I know, the Bear is the only Unlimited to use it in recent years. The fastest Mustangs in recent years (Dago, Strega, Voodoo, etc.) have not. As a certain crew chief once told me, "We can blow 'em up just fine without it."

Technically, you could boost any engine. It's just a matter of how much nitrous you feed it.

I think some time back I heard an unnamed F-1 was found to be using NOS, tank hidden in the pilots flight suit and hooked up to a hidden tube in the cockpit..... Not sure that was the class you were asking about....

NOS has been used in aircraft engines since WWII days. The germans did it first. Not sure how many airplane racers do or have done it. But lots of hydro racers did.

I think you may be confusing two separate incidents....

The tank in the flight suit leg pocket was supposedly Jack Frost in the T-6 class in 1998.

The F-1 incident may be the time that the guy was bringing the tanks on-site for Art Scholl to use in his routine, but he walked into the F-1 hangar and said aloud "Delivery for Ray Cote...."

Is that a NOS tank in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

After years of watching Ray get out front and then jus GO we all wondered how he did it. When Frost got caught a lot of people went "Hey, I wonder"...
I am sure it was just his getting into smooth air, the engine warming up, his awesome tight flying, but one had to wonder if all speculation over the years had any truth to it. He NEVER got caught doing anything of the sort as far as I know so he was either very good or very clean.

Sounds a little dangerous. But a neat idea. However I wouldn't feel good about a flying pipe bomb going around the sticks.

im sure Miss Ashley II used NOS as well, i recall reading that when they put the NACA doghouse on her and moved the radiators they were able to put a second bottle in so she had a big dose of 500 shot...

Could make a bad landing or a gear failure a real event.
