What's preventing the Reno Races from broadcasting live on the Internet?

For the last few years, the biggest surfing event in the world, The Triple Crown, North Shore Oahu Hawaii has been broadcasting live on the Internet. I believe the event goes on for days. I enjoyed watching some of it live on the internet this year.

So why not the Reno Air Races? After all, the technology is here. Start small and let it develop over time. Maybe more people would get interested in attending in person. Sponsored/paid for by the Casinos? Internet betting...? Not everyone in the world has the time/money to go to the races.

Anyone have any inside information they'd like to share?

I worked in the Internet streaming industry for 9 years. I can tell you the idea of "Free" is not true. Someone pays. Without the opportunity to make a profit, or increase brand recognition nobody is going to stream the races.

You can stream it for free on Justin TV, RARA might not like it but I seriously dought they would even hear about it till way after the races are over. Any android or I-Phone would suffice. Now using a phone wouldnt be of the best quality but its better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick.

If I remember right, I watched Sunday for free last year using a link from RARA's website. There was only 2 or 3 second delay from live. I don't know if LiveAirshowTV is going to broadcast this year.

How about if you place an advance $5 online bet on the races with a casino and they provide the videographers/announcer and give you a password for the live broadcast or buy a t-shirt for $20..? There has to be dozens of options that would work, right? I'd be happy with one cameraman and one announcer to start with. Or multiple web cams that zoom, pan, tilt could be used where you don't need staff to operate them. The people online could take turns operating the controls where each person gets 30 seconds and then it passes to the next person in line...

You could get college students to staff the cameras if there's a Communications Program at the local college in Reno... It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be done. Each year it gets better.

The Triple Crown of Surfing does it now. 10 years ago, they didn't broadcast either. Why not the Reno Air Races?

It could become an international event instead of an event for the locals with the online broadcast.

All the technology is available right now. What's delaying this from occurring?

Does anyone sit on the RARA Planning Board or Board of Directors that is a member here that could comment on this idea? I'm sure it's been discussed in detail in the past.

Have you proposed that to RARA? They do listen to comments and suggestions. Need their contact info? See their website. Jes sayin'.

They are up to you kniow where in alligators right now, just weeks away from the races, but there is always next year.

I know this year is way too late to do such. Others who do this for a living must have all ready approached RARA with this idea long ago.

I have not contacted RARA and I wouldn't expect to get anything other than "Thankyou for the suggestion" type of response from an organization like RARA. No bad feelings with them, but that's usually the way a large business operates.

Does RARA have an online forum/discussion board where the public can post their thoughts on their website and where they respond so the public can read?

RARA does not have a bulletin board or Forum, but they do maintain a website, complete with their contact info. They also have e-mail and take telephone calls and have a PO Box and street mailing address. They also maintain regular office hours year round with only a handful of paid employees. And they have a long and good relationship with the many volunteers it takes to put on the NCAR.
If you have no experience in contacting them, how is it that you believe they would not consider a new idea, or blow you off? Nothing ventured, nothing gained. They do start their planning for the next year's event a week or so after the conclusion of the present show/race. I have found them very amenable to good suggestions, and have worked well with RARA for many years.

                  Betty,

I have an idea. How about we start a RARA suggestion/comments board here on this website (if it's ok with the owner) and we can post questions and someone from RARA can answer them.

Anyone want to bet on what RARA's response would be to such an idea? My bets would be with the no, but you never know until you ask.

WHY SHOULD I PROMOTE YOUR AGENDA? I AM ALREADY INVOLVED. ARE YOU A NAG MEMBER? A RACER? A VOLUNTEER? RARA HAS BETTER THINGS DO DO WITH THEIR TIME THAN TO REPLY TO THIS BOARD>

well they have a plug in for a pc or lap top, and one for android, it converts the video into an adobe flash streaming file, the plugin does the rest. The quality is pretty good, I watch Formula 1 races on my home PC and at 1800x1050 it looks pretty good, looks alot better at lower settings, but its not bad. It will stream just fine with a 3g connection, 4g would be better but thats not available everywhere.

www.justintv.com check it out I will be streaming tv shows to my android at nite at the races, so I can watch news etc.
I even stream netflix movies to my phone, same technology (flash) just a different site (netflix). Because the I-Phone dosnt support Flash, cant view the content on them. (dig dig) lol

Not officially, but they do read this place, often..

And we have seen that they usually bend as far as they can to accommodate fan and media needs and wants..

I'll still never forget in Mike Houghton's first year, the Blue Angels or Tbirds, can't remember which, wanted to close the show, rather than the Unlimited Gold on Sunday... this was going to sanitize the field and remove all media... We moaned, Mike said he'd do what he could but had to let us know how important the big teams are to the RARA bottom line...

End result.. I believe for the first time in the history of the team, they DID NOT close the show.

                          Thank you Mike Houghton!

I'll bet it would default to "edge" from 3 or 4g because of the reception.

Best bet would be a microwave feed to a physical connection to high speed internet.

The easiest way to test this is to form a video chat room on one of the chat sites and see how the viewing goes for the guys who are receiving it.

A live play-by-play would be fun to listen to as my friends used to broadcast the pride fighting championships in the late 90s and early 2000 s from japan and it worked well.

As an annual only event, something that ONLY happens in RENO, NEVADA. A one of a kind, there's nothing else like it in the entire world. Why, would anyone in his right mind, who owned the rights to such an event, give it away for free?
Does "Not A Stock Car A Racing" "NASCAR" give it away for free?
