  • Time for an Update

The other day someone on some thread commented that things have been pretty quiet. Even though it is that time of year, it still seems like along time since we have gotten any racer updates.
    1. With all the changes going on around the Bear, does anyone know if this has any impact on the plans for American Spirit? Are there any plans? Activities? Is Dave Cornell involved with Rod Lewis at all any more and how does that effect American Spirit?
    2. Can we get a status update on Furias? How does she look for 2011?
    3. Does anyone know of any other projects that have any prospect of moving forward?

I heard the same that the MB-5 wont race, and American Spirit is a custom designed racer using not much in the warbird part bin.
It was designed by Dave Cornell and Matt Jackson and has been commonly referred to as the Jackson-Cornell Racer. From memory it has T-2 Wing sections, custom fuselage with F-86 style tail feathers and an R-3350 for power and Tricycle gear.

Jackson/Cornell looked to be in the same condition as the newer photo as recently as a year ago, tucked far behind Rare Bear in the Classics hangar. Couldn't get a view from behind the caution tape this year! I overheard a gentleman fielding questions at the Bear pit this year (sorry that I didn't get his name) and he doubted that it would be finished. He mentioned a major dilemma with fitting the nose gear and it and its various components behind the accessory section of the engine. Seems an unlikely oversight for the designers of the project. Can anyone comment on this?

I thought that the MB5 being built in Reno Stead had counter rotating props

It has been more than a hand full of years sine I saw it last. my brain may be meshing aircraft together.

It does have a contra set-up; only the aft prop is installed in the test-run photo.

Yes, indeed. My best air racing dream is Shockwave landing in the hands of a capable, well-financed team. On paper, it makes all others race for second.
