  • Plane Crash from Sundays Sport Class Thunder Mustang 2010.

Sundays Sport Class crash video is currently on the front page of LiveLeak.com. The pilot is very lucky he survived with only minor injuries. Looks like the plane does 1 cartwheel and is broken into pieces 4-5 big pieces.

Can someone edit this video by slowing it down and enlarging it and posting it on youtube where we can watch it in slow motion?

What's the history on the accident?

Click the link for the video http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=e58_1285076147

    Just found this:
Officials say mechanical difficulties and high winds were to blame for plane crash Sunday at the National Championship Air Races at the Reno Stead Airport.

The Thunder Mustang piloted by George Giboney went down during the final lap of the Super Sport Gold championship race, according to a publicist for the event.

Giboney says he heard his plane -"Rapid Travel"- misfire a couple of times, and then the engine cut out and stopped completely. He called a "mayday," and when he attempted to land he hit the runway and bounced. That's when a wind gust took the plane off course and into the dirt, the plane then hit a bump and shot up into the air. The plane began to cartwheel and the plane came almost completely apart as it tumbled.

Giboney got out of the plane without help and, was attended to by onsite emergency personnel, that examined him at the Reno Air Race medical facility. He was released shortly thereafter. He suffered cuts on his arms and legs.

The OMG post has some good info and photos, but it's been closed. The best video is still here: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=e58_1285076147

Does anyone know if there was a camera in the cockpit or on the plane?

Yes, George did have an onboard camera mounted on the left rear cockpit bulkhead near his helmet, but he hasn't said if it was damaged in the crash, if it was running, or if he's even had time to see if it captured the event. It appeared to be intact when I saw it Monday morning.

Based on the pictures and what you know, will the plane be scrapped and parts/pieces picked off for reuse or can it be rebuilt with what's remaining?

What is the white water looking stuff coming off the left wing in this picture? http://www.aafo.com/hangartalk/attac...8&d=1285032932

Not much there to rebuild,we(george and crew)cut up what was left of the wing and loaded it into his trailer....some stuff will be saved for future use and alot will be scrapped...The most inportant part(george),we will use again to pilot something

Can you give us an estimate of the cost of the crashed airplane? What the owner lost in dollars?

Several times you asked questions about dollars involving the air races. What is your interest here? Interested in racing? or just inappropriately nosy?

The estimate of the cost of a crashed airplane? are you serious?

The cost to the owner is time, heart, soul, effort, nights spent awake dreaming and creating his masterpiece. If you can put a dollar amount on that - good luck.

If you are interested in racing and are seriously interested to see what it would take, contact the individual class you are planning to join and talk with some of the members.

If you are just being nosy - what a pathetic use of your time. And... it's none of your business - is the appropriate response.

Bill.. I sympathize with all the emotion you guys are feeling over this but harsh answers like yours only hurt feelings and create chaos here... please try to be a bit more considerate of the feelings of others who post questions. I believe this is just innocent curiosity... a way to feel "more" sorry for George, if you will..

Many folks may not be aware of just how involved George was with the construction of his beautiful "one off" TM..

A quick google search provided this on the cost of a Thunder Mustang:

A used, complete, built one is on the ThunderMustang.com website under Planes For Sale for $599,000. http://www.thundermustang.com/

and Wikipedia has it listed at $285,000 which I assume is a new, complete, unfinished plane? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papa_51_Thunder_Mustang

So based on those figures, one could assume the losses were somewhere between $300,000-$600,000?

What does the insurance companies do about planes used in racing? Are they covered for damages or replacement costs or are reimbusements denied because you are racing?
