  • Sunday Gold Race Line Up

With the absence of some notables this year the gold race on Sunday could have some unusual entries. Assuming everybody holds together I believe it could look like this...
    (In No Order)
    Bear
    Strega
    Voodoo
    GG
    Dreadnaught
    RRIII
    Steadfast
    Miss A
    Merlin's Magic

      My guess for finish order

Bear (the new motor will hold together)
      Strega (very very close second)
      Dreadnaught (half lap back)
      Voodoo
      Galloping Ghost
      RRIII
-------------- Bear and Strega lap these three -------------
      Miss A
      Merlin's Magic
      Steadfast

        Bear,
        Strega
        Ghost

        Dreadnaught
        RRIII
        Steadfast
        Miss A

I really think everyone is underestimating Galloping Ghost. It will be a fight and very close finish with Voodoo.

Me thinks VooDoo is the one being underestimated...

My dream is to see a race on Sunday afternoon with the top 4-5 finishers all within a few seconds of each other (without any cuts). Throw in a couple of lead changes and I don't care what order the come in.

I agree, everyone is definitely underestimating the Galloping Ghost! The Bear has got to be the strongest competition this year though. Last year she was very fast for having a close to stock engine and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if this new race motor puts her up front on Sunday. Plus, I have no faith in the Merlins hanging together if they are pushed hard by the Bear!

Re: Sunday Gold Race Line Up

O.K., I guess I've gotta put in my 2 cents worth.

From watching the last couple of years, we really have no idea what Strega has in her. (I'm praying it's not much more than what we've already seen)
Anyway my prediction (including my hopes) are:

Rod Lewis' RARE BEAR - (flying with the heart of Lyle)
                        Strega
Voodoo and Ghost - who knows who's in front on this one...
                        RRIII
                        The ghost shadow of Sherm...
The one, the Only - BUICK!!!
                        Everybody else.

Top 4 could mix it up a little during the week, but on Sunday, if my Bear holds together (praying to the god of Cornell) we could, and I say could, see speeds pushing upwards of 515, possibly 520

                        Your mileage may vary.

2000 miles and closing really, really fast,

                        Tom

I really do hope the Ghost does well but, it's their first year out with what is essentially a new bunch of systems.

It may be the Ghost's first year racing, but the plane has been together for a whole year. I think that it will surprise a few people. I recently read some posts by Matt Jackson about how fast Stiletto was when she had the boil-off system installed, and I feel like with the level of experience Jimmy has with racing mustangs that the Ghost will not be a slouch in its first year.

Re: Sunday Gold Race Line Up

This year's top 6 will all be so fast, and finish so close together (with the Ghost winning) that they will be bought up and semi-retired to the fully flying Air Racing Hall of Fame Museum that Paul Allen will build at Stead (and bring out only every other year to race against the "newbies) , thus opening up this lineup for the 2011 Gold:

1st-Furias and a new-winged Czech Mate in a first ever Dead Heat photo-finish tie.
2nd-American Spirit custom built with R-3350 in debut.
3rd-Shockwave custom built with R-4360 in debut.
4th-Dago Red with new owner and a few new tricks.
5th-Race 232 September Fury with new owner and R-4360.
                              6th-Race 74 F2G Super Corsair.
                              7th-a re-engineered Precious Metal with a composite 5-blade prop.
                              8th-The turbo-compound R-3350 Yak-11 (ex-FrostBite, ex-Red Heat, ex-Mr, Awesome) with new owner.
9th-Wildfire with a 21st century Skunk Works crew.

Oh man, I ate too many tacos before going to bed last night.
