The Original 7 Mercury Astronauts had titanium balls and did what had to be done to get our manned space program off the ground, real hero's in every sense.
Younger versions of John Sharp, Carl Swensen and myself had the great fortune to race with Deke Slayton back in the early eighties. I fondly remember pulling up on Deke in a heat race, he in Stinger and me in Fang, and thinking to myself "thats F'n Deke Slayton I'm flying next to". We were both screaming down the back course just a few feet above the sage brush. I passed him between #4 and #5 when we both well below the barrels and following the race we were met by a RARA official. We both had a good laugh about it later. Deke was very approachable and super friendly guy.
