  • Salute to TEAM STREGA- 'The Passing of The Torch'

"Every once in a while- Something goes- 'Right'!" -is a favorite old saying.

Add-into that equation: natural talent & positive attitude- combined w/healthy ambition to achieve set goals, + years of expert mentoring, preparation, planning & plenty of practice in optimum settings, then something can go- 'REALLY-RIGHT'!!!

A splendid example of this kind of magic formula at work has to be TEAM STEGA's remarkable showing at Reno '09 NCAR, culminating w/22-year old pilot- Steven Hinton flying Race #7 to a decisive victory in the Unlimited Championship Gold Race finale, (-at record speed, no less!). (Bet even the stars & planets were in perfect alignment for this momentous event!).

And- What a great followup cap to last year's team victory, that notched pilot/owner- Bill 'Tiger' Destefani's 7th-Reno Unlimited Gold Championship in the exquisite & omnipotent STREGA & marked his retirement as one of The Fastest-of-Motorsports' greatest race pilots in history!

Indeed, it was a truly-genuine "Passing of The Torch" ritual for the seasoned veteran & his gifted young apprentice successor, and also for Steven & his famous professional aviator father- Steve Hinton, Sr., himself-a double Reno Unlimited Gold Champion air racer & former World Speed Record holder. Air Racing is noted for it's many storybook happenings, and this year's edition was both fun & amazing to watch, let alone be part of.

In appreciation to TEAM STREGA & their new raceplane driver, I'd like to share some photo work w/everyone, to help continue the victory celebration, w/best wishes for continued-success & good luck in the future. I think it would be fitting & appropriate to commence w/a gallery of shots from last year to set things up just right & hope y'all enjoy these photographs, so here goes...

    "GROOMING FOR GOLD"...

    Photos (L-R/Top to bottom):

    1. Chino Airport (Cal-Aero Field), Ca. - USA's West Coast flying warbird mecca. Home to Planes of Fame Air Museum & several other aviation museums & warbird rebuilders over the years, Chino was the birthplace for many famous Unlimited Class air racer projects: #69 Miss Candace, #5 Red Baron RB-51, #34 Miss Foxy Lady, #1 Super Corsair, #8 Dreadnought & the custom #18 Tsunami, to name several. This historic airfield's been a 'Flying Warbird Boot Camp' for a big roster of notable warbird pilots, air racers, aircraft mechanics, restorers & fabricators over the years. Chino's also home to TEAM STREGA's new race pilot- Steven Hinton,Jr., along w/his family's aviation businesses.

2-3. Sun. 9/17/78: Looking back in time- we see 26-year old Unlimited Class race pilot- Steve Hinton, Sr. strapped-into the cockpit of the legendary crimson & white #5 Red Baron RB-51 (N7715C), before the start of the Gold final. RB Team Owner-Ed Browning (rubbing his chin) is standing on the wing w/Robbie Patterson & crew chief-Randy Scoville (at rt.), & a young John Maloney stands below in front. The following pic captures an elated RB crew w/family & friends- celebrating Steve's victory in Race 5, as youngest-pilot ever to win the Reno Unlimited Class Gold Championship (until succeeded by son- Steven Jr. @ Reno '09). A relieved Browning accepts a swig of victory bubbly from Hinton (-seen w/lovely fiance'- Karen Maloney at his side). Team mates- John Muszala, Robbie Patterson, Randy Scoville (& possibly Jim or John Maloney-2nd fm rt.) are also in the picture. Hinton's winning speed was 415.457-av/mph.

    4. Sun. 9/15/85: Steve Hinton notched his second Reno NCAR Unltd. Gold victory flying the big Chino 'home-brewed' corncob F2G- Race #1 Super Corsair (NX31518), @ a race record speed of 438.186-av/mph. The ecstatic team is pictured heading back to the pits after their big surprise upset win.

    5. Mon. 9/20/99: After mixed-success racing John Sandberg's Boland-designed custom Unlimited- #18 Tsunami (NX39JR), Steve Hinton retired from air racing pilot duty to devote his talents & energies towards the successful growth & development of Chino's POF Air Museum & Fighter Rebuilders warbird restoration business, contract flying for the movie industry & test flight work. Thankfully, his vast aviation expertise continues to benefit the air racing motorsport via flying the POF Lockheed T-33 jet as the Unlimited Class pace plane & safety backup, & providing sound mentoring advice, when called upon.

    6. Sat. 9/21/90: A vintage Reno pit portrait of TEAM STREGA's fearless leader- Bill 'Tiger' Destefani, in his prime, wearing his Nomex flight suit. Tiger won his first Reno NCAR Unlimited Gold trophy at Reno '87, and six more since- all flying his famous Super-Mustang- #7 STREGA (N71FT). Destefani's fierce competitive style & winning spirit put this Bakersfield, Ca. farmer into the very top ranks of air racing history's greatest race pilots, and one of its' most-influential persons. His race team's member roster over the years to date, reads like an air racing- 'Who's-Who' directory of top talent, including the late & great engine wizard- Dwight Thorn.

7-10. Mon. 9/8/08: These four candid shots document Tiger's return from a late afternoon STREGA test flight. He's met by some of his team, including crew chief- L.D. Hughes & young Steven Hinton, along w/his dad- Steve, Sr. An obvious pilot debrief follows, w/some shared notes of wisdom emphasized. (#7 qualified 3rd the next day-posting 472.792)

11-14. Sun. 9/14/08: "Sevens Wild!"-The Tiger's Back! Three post-Gold Race photos capture TEAM STREGA retrieving their winning thoroughbred Mustang racer from the ramp celebration ceremony in front of the grandstands, for the parade tow back to their pit stall party. The Awards Banquet finale photo of a totally-jazzed-Tiger poppin' the cork in triumph, says it all! Destefani's hard comeback trail stretched over a decade & made the victory champagne taste all the sweeter!

    15. Tue. 9/9/08: "Breaking Into The Big Leagues" - Steven Hinton, Jr. gets officially-qualified as an Unlimited Class race pilot. Flying- Daryl Bond's TF-51 #81 Lady Jo (N327DB), Hinton posted a speed of 345.371-mph at 3:30pm. The photo shows him on his Q-run going by Outer 4 Pylon.

16-17. Sat. 9/13/08: For racing duties, Steven Hinton swapped horses- switching-over to fly Steve Seghetti's P-51D #44 Sparky (N151D) in the UNL Bronze heats & gave a good showing w/a 3rd-Place finish in Sunday's Bronze Final. These two shots show Hinton & Sparky rounding Outer 7 Pylon during UNL HT-3C, running in 2nd-place behind Robbie Patterson in Lady Jo.

    18. Thur. 9/11/08: On top of crew chores working for TEAM STREGA & rookie racing duties w/Sparky, Steven Hinton somehow managed to find time to work-in a sundown Wildcat check-flight in Tom Camp's FM-2 Race #2 Air Biscuit (N86572).

    19. Sun. 9/14/08: At the RARA Awards Banquet, Steven Hinton collected trophies for 3rd-Place UNL Bronze, AND- 'Rookie of the Year', as well! (Steven's awards look even better w/pretty trophy girl-Ms. Andi Lynch (newly-crowned 2009 Miss Reno Rodeo) in the picture!)

    20. Sun. 9/7/08: "Under The Witch's Spell" - Taken a week earlier before race week got into full-swing, this candid ramp portrait of a contemplating Steven Hinton sitting in Strega, seems to convey that very special bond between a pilot & his favorite airplane.

Re: Salute to TEAM STREGA- 'The Passing of The Torch'

Race Week- RENO 2009 NCAR- "Carrying the Torch"

Following Steven Hinton's successful return attendance at Reno '09 PRS in June, & getting to fly STREGA around Stead Field's Unlimited racecourse at speed, September's NCAR race week came up quickly... Hinton again announced his arrival in Race #7, by making the traditional fast low-approach down Stead's main runway, & what a pass it was! It was obvious to all present there watching it, that STREGA & her new race jockey were back in top form & ready to defend Tiger Destefani's brilliant Unlimited Gold Race victory of the previous year.

Now then, here's a gallery of photos capturing some TEAM STREGA race week highlights, up to Sunday's Reno '09 Unlimited Gold Championship finale showdown...

    DBD

    Photos (L-R/Top to bottom):

    1. 3/4-rear portrait of #7 STREGA lit up by a high Reno sun- 'The Witch' looking every inch the Unlimited champion heavy metal thoroughbred Mustang racer she is.

    2. Mon. 9/14/09- UNLTD-Q & Practice Session #2: It was truly a beautiful blue sky Nevada day- w/bright white cloud accents, when Steven Hinton & STREGA took the course for some speed laps. This pic was taken Monday at 4:11pm, going around Outer 4, & flying his great line. At 4:00pm on Tuesday w/the racecourse to themselves & under ideal conditions- Hinton qualified Race #7 into the top slot @ 486.170-mph.

3-5. Thur. 9/17/09: A trio of shots from Hinton's late aftn. test flight- taxiing, takeoff, & overhead Mayday pullup f/a quick emergency landing, after a loose oil plug caused STREGA to lose most of her precious oil supply-putting the health of her racing Merlin engine in possible jeopardy.

6-9. Fri. 9/18/09: Four photos capturing the mood of STREGA's sunrise test flight the following morning- Steven Hinton has much on his mind, settling into #7's cockpit to prepare for flight, as his crew completes final preflight details. Dad-Steve Sr. watches on, w/engine man-Mike Nixon alongside (facing camera). A lingering stack fire ignites as the prop begins rotation during engine startup (-The waking Witch is yawning in protest...Keep them blades a-turnin'!). Thorough inspections by the crew reveal no apparent damage to the race motor, luckily, culminating w/a successful a.m. test flight to get ready for TEAM STREGA's first day of racing at Reno '09.

10-13. Fri. 9/18/09-UNL HT-2A- "Lets Get Ready to Rumble!": Hinton's first event racing STREGA began fittingly- w/his pole-position formup on the T-33 pace plane jet flown by his dad. Everyone watching the father & son duo flying together for-'The Real Deal' of Steven's first UNL Gold Heat, shared in the emotion of the moment of that special happening then taking place in the first photo. The race start shot fm Outer 4 Pylon- shows Hinton in STREGA holding the inside lead, while being aggressively-challenged by Sherm Smoot in the silver & blue Super Yak- #86 CZECH MATE, flying closely above in second. A stunning race portrait of STREGA shaving P-4, is followed w/a near head-on view of Hinton being challenged next during a subsequent lap, by Dan Martin in his potent P-51D- #20 RIDGE RUNNER- flyin' faster-than-ever this year, using last year's Dago Red Sparrow race Merlin. But for his cut of Outer 6 Pylon on the final Lap-6, Smooter might've won the heat, but TEAM STREGA prevailed, w/Steven winning UNL HT-2A @ 450.743-av/mph, w/Martin finishing 2nd @ 448.386. 'One down-two to go!'

14-15. Sat. 9/19/09: Jumping ahead to some Saturday night moves going on at STREGA's pit stall- Vintage V12s' veteran engine man-Jose Flores is seen removing a camshaft assembly from #7's race motor during 'routine maintenance'. We were on an ATV swing thru the pits at the time, & stopped-by STREGA to see Steven about signing a new piece of orange Section 3 ladies' lingerie, if not too busy. "No Problem-I'd be happy to!" -Hinton replied w/a big warm grin, & promptly-jumped-down off STREGA's wing to oblige the request.

"Hey, Steve- would ya mind signin' my hat too?"..."Yeah, sure, but- I don't think you really want me to sign THAT hat, man, now-do ya?"..."What?- I'll be damned! Forgot I had my Voodoo hat on tonite-Too much party'n, I guess!...Awww...Heck-Yeah! Go ahead & sign it, anyway, Steve, if ya don't mind-That oughta REALLY make it a collector's item!" (A group photo captures the v-funny moment: Steven Hinton poses w/RARA volunteers- Farrihn Enos & John Moore-displaying their prized autographed air race memorabilia.)

16-17. Sat. 9/19/09- UNL HT-3A: A dramatic pair of STREGA pylon racing portraits show Race #7 approaching & then rounding- Outer 4. Though leading convincingly throughout Saturday's 6-lap Gold heat, Hinton cut Outer 6 Pylon on Lap-2, and got penalized 12-secs. & moved back to 2nd-place behind his pursuer- Will Whiteside, flying Bob Button's purple P-51D- #5 VOODOO. Will got the win, w/his 485.948-av/mph finish. Even w/his penalty applied, Hinton's adjusted finish speed was 480.077-av/mph! And- Dan Martin & #20 RIDGE RUNNER finished 3rd @ an impressive speed of 477.809! All 8 racers finished, w/the slowest speed being 438+ av/mph. WOW! -What a barn-burner of a heat race! The fans in the stands were goin' nuts! "AWESOME-Size LARGE!" 'Two down w/'The Big One' comin' up!

Re: Salute to TEAM STREGA- 'The Passing of The Torch'

'GRADUATION DAY' @ 'STREGA-U' / Reno '09 NCAR UNLIMITED GOLD!

All Photos- Sunday, 9/20/09 (L-R/Top to bottom):

1-3. UNL GOLD Start- Outer 4 Pylon: These 3 race start shots (taken in sequence & selected fm a 10-fps camera motor drive series), are interesting, -in that they capture the relative positions of the racers & the jockeying f/position going-on between them. Steven Hinton is again assertively-holding down his pole postion by flying a tight, consistent course line. Note the altering flight paths of his nearest pursuing competition (Voodoo, Rare Bear, Ridge Runner & Czech Mate) -just within a brief couple seconds' time frame, & w/all the racers- 'runnin' like scalded cats'! (P-4 is a critically-strategic pylon on Stead's UNLTD racecourse, -especially coming-off the race start launch to begin Lap-1. It's v-important for a race pilot to turn it tightly & smoothly.)

      4. UNL GOLD- Last Lap (8)- P-4: Hinton's really flying STREGA on a rail, (w/Voodoo mayday'd-out & the rest of the contenders just hangin'-in behind), headed for the finish line & his first Unlimited Gold Championship victory. Even after throttling-back #7's engine after Lap-2, Steven Hinton was able to have STREGA post an impressive winning-record speed of 491.822-av/mph! Hinton's closest rival was John Penney & #77 RARE BEAR-coming in 2nd @ 479.088 (w/o a real race motor!).

      5. 'PORTRAIT OF A WINNER': At Stead Field's ramp center stage in front of the grandstands, a very proud & excited new UNL Gold Champion- Steven Hinton, Jr., revels in his victory w/boisterous cheers of congratulation coming fm the crowd of well-wishers surrounding #7 STREGA. Sunshine beams-off the Official Reno NCAR Champions' Trophy being held by Hinton- A shining symbol, in this wondrous example of a successful- 'Passing of The Torch'.

6-7. The traditional- 'Victory Wing Ride' -fm winner's circle back to the pits, is a privileged treat greatly-enjoyed by victorious team crew members. A rear angle shot of smiling TEAM STREGA ridin' The Witch's wings enr the V-celebration party at Race #7's pit, & portait pic of crewman- Bill Rogers & wife-Kathleen (a.k.a.-'Strega Fan'...Dig those 'racey' earrings!), ridin' STREGA all-the-way-even as she's being slipped back into her stall- leaves no doubt about it!!!

      8. Steven Hinton gets a big 'bear-hug' fm- Bob Cardin & some warm congrats fm- Jim 'JD' Dale of Rod Lewis' #77 RARE BEAR crew, f/his great job of racing STREGA. (Cardin was responsible f/restoration of P-38 Glacier Girl, & JD's a veteran warbird specialist & Unlimited crewman.)

9-11. 'Takin' Care of Your Fans': Hinton demonstrated his excellent PR skills & genuine air race fan appreciation, by enthusiastically-accomodating countless requests for autographs, photos & handshakes throughout race week (-as shown in these photos of Steven signing a NCAR hat, the front of a Strega fan's t-shirt, & posing w/a young fan-whose smile tells all).

12-13. 'Keepin' the Judges happy too!': Hinton signs the back of longtime RARA volunteer pylon judge captain-Carole Scott, & then graciously poses f/a congrats handshake photo w/pylon judge-Dave Blair.

      Sunday Night RARA AWARDS BANQUET:

      14. 'Petite & pretty' young trophy girl- Ms. Lauren Neil (newly-crowned 2010 Miss Reno Rodeo) presents the 'tall & handsome' young- Steven Hinton w/his trophy award, as he gazes out at the crowd. Hinton received two trophies that evening: 2009- 'Fastest Unlimited Qualifier' & 1st-Place-Unlimited Gold Championship Race.

15-17. After donning the Gold Champion Jacket, Steven Hinton holds the classic RARA/NCAR Unlimited Class Champions' Trophy & hoists it up in triumphant exhilaration to the banquet crowd, before speaking at the podium to thank his crew, family & friends, & race fans, f/all their tremendous support.

18-20. 'Under the spotlights': In these last photos-TEAM STREGA members, led by leader- Bill 'Tiger' Destefani, join their new young champion pilot on stage f/the final awards ceremony of the evening. Steven Hinton shows his gratitude & respect f/his team boss & race pilot mentor, by passing-over the UNLTD Champions' Trophy to Tiger, who then turns it over to his team's two race engine experts: Vintage V12s' -Mike Nixon & Jose Flores. 'The Passing of The Torch' was finalized - thus-ending yet another 'incredible & unforgettable'- Reno NCAR!

BRAVO TEAM STREGA!!! Thanks for all the Magic Moments over the years & Best of Luck in 2010!

Bucky - Thanks for the wonderful pics of my favorite racer, and those who drive and win with her. After the long dry spell (1998-2007), it's great to see the Witch back where she belongs, in the winner's circle. Here's to Tiger, Stevo, L.D., Mike Nixon and the whole crew...
