  • CZECH MATE

"Always the bridesmaid - never the bride"..., comes to mind, thinking about this pretty silver & blue bird. But hopefully, one day-() John Moore's -Team Czech Mate's persistence, will eventually pay off in Gold for these great folks.

Gotta say, that I've always had a thing for this little Super Yak, ever since the day the late & great Bob Yancey first brought her down to race at Reno in 1987 as Race #101. What a treat to be able to still enjoy watching this same bird consistently compete in the Unlimited Class Championship events as Race #86. Pilot- Sherman Smoot, is one of the best sticks out on the racecourse today, in my humble opinion, and I know many will agree. N5943, more than any other Unlimited, has that authentic look of a real- 'Golden Age'/Cleveland-Era Thompson Trophy racer to tie-in with modern 400+mph Unlimiteds.

Here's Sherm driving the shiny Yakolev around Outer 4 Pylon last September, during Saturday's UNLTD Heat-3A. Go CZECH MATE!

              Hi Bucky,

great picture ! Thanks for sharing.
I tried to get that combination of angle and propblur more than once and have to say: nearly impossible with my abilities and equipment.

Czech Mate (that beast has personality) & the whole involved Bakersfield/Templeton/Reno(...) gang are really special in a very positive way. Looking forward to September .

Best greetings to Linda & you from Frauke and me.

Sincere thanks to ALL for your kind kudos for my Czech Mate photo, and for sharing your fine images, as well. Much appreciated!

Funny, but I didn't drive the shutter for this one - just snapped one frame & it worked out. Crazy.

Wie gehts', Jan und Frauke... - Linda & I send our 'best wishes dittos' to you both.

BTW - #86 is one of Linda's favorites too (being a Czech girl herself w/ old Bakersfield family ties). We just finished our last bottle of Sherm's very excellent 'Fighter Pilot Red' wine (gotta get some more of his 'goodies from the vine').

                See ya'll come September!

Great shot! You can almost hear the engine popping as it floats in.
They are all great of course. That one just has "feeling" to it.
