  • Accomodation in Reno Area

    Hi,

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction, I'm hoping to come out to Reno for the Air Races this year and was wondering if somebody could help me with where the best places to stay are? I'm not looking at spending a fortune (hopefully) and as i am travelling on my own the accomodation doesn't have to be too special, comfortable would do me. I would be renting a car so dont mind driving a little way if that lowers the price?

    Many Thanks

    Chris

What some international travelers have done in years past is to come over and camp out at St. Michael's Catholic church, which is about 200 yards from the main gate. You can purchase camping gear locally for quite a bit less than most hotels will charge for rooms, and there's food and showers on site. Last year we had a fantastic BBQ there on Saturday night, too with a couple dozen people from this board in attendance.
Nothing beats the sound of racing engines being run up at 6:00 Sunday morning in preparation for the big day, either! Nice alarm clock.
Please feel free to PM me if you'd like some more contact info.

The past few years I've stayed at the Sands Hotel. Its not one of the flashy hotels but is comfotable. Unless you really need it I wouldn't rent a car. I always take the city bus. It's about a ten minute walk from the Sands and take you to about a 1/4 mi. from the main gate. Parking and the traffic can then be avoided. YOu will love the races!

I always stay in the same place...

I stay at the Grand Sierra resort aka the aiport hilton aka the mgm grand etc. (it has changed owners over the years)

Voted Best Over Gaming Resort, Best Rooms and Best Suites in Reno, NV. Enjoy spacious luxury pools, award-winning dining, and world-class entertainment.

I really don't like to stay in downtown Reno, and its very convenient to stay right next to highway 395 that goes to stead. All you need to do is drive a few yards, turn left then turn left again and its a straight shot to the aerodrome and coming back is the same (right turn left turn right turn) and you are home. If you need to go out and play its lots easier to get around by cab at times than it is to drive. I have been doing Reno for 30+ years and work in operations so this works out best for me.

Your not really there unless your sleeping in the dirt.

another vote for the Church camping area( although I always camp across the street from the actual church.

Circus Circus is connected by sky-bridges to 2 other hotels/casinos; the parking is free; close to a major drug store/pharmacy; and 2 choices of highway access to Stead. Also walking distance to downtown Reno and the hospital.
My group will be paying $49.00 per night except for Fri and Sat. Those nights will be $119.00. Courtesy tansportation to and from Cannon Airport.

Hey Chris, there's lots of hotels in the "cheap" range, although, most charge a premium on race weekend...

Hi Chris, just thought I would mention that I usually reserve a rental car now in May ( already have ) and get great normal prices of $30 to $50 a day. If you wait until the Air Races they are well over $100.00 a day. City bus runs out to Stead for just a few dollars. Many of the smaller motels run $ 49.00 a nite if you stay 3 to 5 days. Have a great time.

I actually live here and i was pondering staying out there just because you get a completely different feel for the races being out there at night seeing just how hard alot of the crews work. Not to mention it takes the DUI out of the equation.

                          Re: Accomodation in Reno Area

I usually take a break after the main action, come home and relax, cool off (or warm up) then head back out a couple of evenings. Of course, you can't drink till your planted. I'm luckily close enough to see some of what's happening from the yard.
I would agree, the church or any other campground out there (I spent years at the Soroptimist lot) is the best place to really get the feel, along with the cameraderie of a ton of like minded campers. If the rougher life (it can be hard in a tent if it decides to rain or get windy) is not for you or yours, however, I would start at Grand Sierra and work from there!

There are some new places here in Reno. One being, the Holiday Inn Express across from GRS. Hampton Inn is south Reno is a little furthere out, but it's new also. and a few other places in town that I can't think right now, but I can continue to look around for you if you want..

One year we stayed at one the "fleabag" motels that I believe has since been torn down. We walked in, turned around and went to JJ's market, which is where Silver Legacy is now, and bought a can of Lysol and doused the room. This room cost more than Circus Circus, where we have stayed at since.
