Hi All,
I know this is OT, but im just home from the Classic Fighters Omaka 09 Airshow.
This airshow is a Biennial show held at the historic Omaka Aerodrome near Blenheim New Zealand.
The show this year featured a couple of notable debut's.. the first was a RESTORED B.E.2f that flys with an original RAF.1 V8 powerplant.
Second was an Avro 504k that again is an original aircraft complete with one of the 3 orignal Le Rhone Rotary powerplant's it flew with in the 1920's.
Third, and the one that most people were there to see was the debut of the Deere family Spitfire Mk IXc.
this spitfire is a combat veteran of 2 wars. Built in 1944, it served with the RAF in Italty, then after the war it was transfered to the Italian Airforce, where after retirement with the Italian's, it was sold to the Israeli airforce in the late 1940's and after 3 years service and another zero time rebuild, it was sold to the burmese airforce. After combat service there, it was retired and put on display as a gate guardian.
It was purchased by the Deere family in NZ and shipped to them.
It flew again for the first time on the on the 18th of March this year after a 5 year rebuild. The aircraft is finished as it left the Castle Bromwich factory in 1944, with all correct RAF markings, an original TR9 radio in the bay, the only difference is the coding on the fuselage, with the AL markings being the personal markings of Wing Commander Alan Deere (yes he is the uncle to brendan deere who owns this superbly turned out machine)
Taking it back into the skies was Warbird pilot Keith Skilling. Keith is most known in NZ as pilot of the Vought Corsairs that have/currently reside in NZ.
Here are some pics.... The show features lots of WW1 airplanes, also the RAAF brought a DHC-4 Caribou over and gave an impressive display of handling with the 45yr old short haul transport with most of the display flown at under 100kts and inside the airfield boundary.
