  • "HOWZ YER PLUGS...?"

    Sat. 9/16/00 - RENO/Stead Field:

Longtime CHAMPION Rep. - Frank Gurko (at left), inspects his company's special racing spark plugs for veteran RR Merlin race engine builder- Jack Hovey, after their removal from Bob Button's purple P-51D Unlimited Class racer- #5 VOODOO, after UNL Heat-3A.

Race pilot- Matt Jackson finished the heat in 2nd-place @ 431.395-av/mph behind winner Skip Holm flying Terry Bland's Mustang- #4 DAGO RED (441.297-av/mph).

Visual spark plug examinations provide vital information about an aircraft engine's ignition efficiency & clues regarding the overall health of a high-performance powerplant. Many times have fouled plugs, & other related ignition ills, ruined an air racer's trophy aspirations.

(Note: Frank Gurko subsequently left Champion, to go into business for himself as- "The Plug Guy")
