  • If you could have TEN historic racers....

    A weekend fantasy question:

If you were a multi-millionaire in about 1966 and wanted to start a flying Unlimited Racer collection/museum knowing full well you could lay enough cash on the table to buy any EXISTING old or active racer that was still available between then and 1996, what 10 racers would you buy and restore? Here's the twist, every year you would bring out in rotation a different one of your collection's racers for a go at Reno.

They wouldn't have to be the fastest, just your favorites...and select a variety. You have a 30-year span-get started!

    My ten:

    1) Anson Johnson's scoopless Mustang #45, N13Y.
    2) Larry Haven's P-63 before it crashed, but put in Charles Tucker's race #28 colors.
    3) Lefty's P-38, NX25Y restored to the J.D. Reed colors of the Flying Red Horse.
    4) P-39Q Cobra II before Mike Carroll got it, and restored to 1946 colors.
    5) The 1947 winning F2G #74 from Walter Soplata's collection.
    6) The Mira Slovak #80 Bearcat.
    7) Chuck Lyford's #8 Mustang restored in Challenger colors.
    8) Ed Weiner's checkerboard #49 P-51D
    9) Cliff Cummin's #69 Miss Candace. (with Galloping Ghost colors on one side and the Mojave '75 colors on the other).
    10) Miss Merced Sea Fury #87 in Sherm Cooper's 1970 colors.

Oh boy, I guess it's way too hard to cut this list to ten. I left out the #37 P-51D NX37492 Jay Dee, the #46 P-51C Mantz Bendix racer, #84 Stiletto, Greeenamyer's Conquest One, and Loening's #2 P-51D in Miss Salmon River colors. And would Jack have sold me Tsunami for any price before it was too late?

Re: If you could have TEN historic racers....

I chose 1996 as a cut-off year to help eliminate most of the favorite current racers, which by definition of my criteria would keep them out of current regular competition.

In further thought after my initial post I would have to definately substitute the RB-51 Red Baron for my Ed Weiner #49 pick. My post was a spontaneous type thing, and I hadn't gave it much thought. I can't believe I left off the RB! I should have changed it to a count of twenty as well. Then I could have included Sandberg's Tipsy Miss Kingcobra, Mr. Awesome before it's crash, and many others.

I wish we had an Air Racing museum that would cover all of the classes and all of the years including pre-war.

There's a pretty good sprinkling of ex-racers around the country in small museums, and of course many in the bigger museums (NASM, EAA,Week's collection, Evergreen's P-51D, etc.) but wouldn't it be cool to have one museum with almost of them and have it located right at Stead?

                  Oh well, one can dream...

If I could have ten racers, they would be memorable for various reasons. Stunning original designs, terrific efforts that made forward strides, shear beauty.
In no particular order but all icons -
Blind Mans Bluff - new ideas and great name
Mira Slovak's P-39 Protien 21 - feather light with trajectory turns
                      Stilleto - slick
                      September Fury - qualifying
Miss Candace - winning on her birthday
Miss Merced - looked like a winner just showing up
                      Vendetta - creative originality
                      World Jet/Precious Metal - beauty
                      Miss Ashley II - original
Roto Finish Special - for development and pilot balls

Why only ten? Honorable Mention -
Crazy Horse - had the look of Wow!
Red Barron/Griffon - anything to win
                      Pre-kelp Dago Red - elegant
Pond Racer - original but not thought out
Big Boss Man - shear muscle
White Lightning - hey, you can't fly that low!
                      Anything flown by Greenie

Why only Unlimiteds? There are some pretty cool old Formula Ones/Goodyear racers (Rivets, Shoestring, etc.), Biplanes (Scorceress), and T-6's (Gotcha, The Excorsist) that raced as well.

                        Just my $.02 worth.

How about Alfred Goss in SNJ/AT6 Racer "Warlock" who has been there many many years & has always put on a topnotch race & the plane is always kept spotless. (Could you tell I'm a "Warlock" fan.)

You are right, and for the same reasons I ask myself why Rare Bear is not so mentioned as one of the tops
