  • racing Mustang question

What is the vapor that trails a racing Mustang's right wing during a race? Viewed from underneath, it originates near the aileron's left joint (on the right wing) between the aileron and the wing. Sometimes, I think it's 2 trails (one closer to the wingtip) on Strega or Dago.

    Thanks.

Its vortices generated from their modified wingtips.

the right wing is the usual location for the water storage

if there is a leak in any plumbing thats where it goes. I believe Strega had a leak this year and it was spotted by one of the contest committee and reported as a possible fuel leak over the ramp net. He did report that it was the right wing so I for one wasn't super worried but we all went on high alert including the fire tender I was parked next to. Hats off to them, they heard the call and even though there was no mayday, they immediately started suiting up just in case...thanks fire guy!

OK, here it is on Miss A this year. I don't think it's just "ADI and spraybar." I'm not convinced it's a "leak" because I saw it on several of the racers. It's certainly not a wingtip vortex. Anyone know what this is?

looks like a vaporized leak to me.

It's the spraybar/ADI overflow tube...... when the aircraft "skids", the G forces cause the fluid to escape. It's no big deal - as stated, a lot of the racers have this happen occasionally. It's damn hard to keep the ball in the center all the time while racing on the course.
