Back in the mid-40's a good friend of my Fathers owned one, somewhere I have a pic of my Dad at the controls of it while flying. He said it was kind of like the flying party bus, they would fly to fields near local towns and head to the nearest Pub put down a few and fly back... or not... LOL
It is a beauty and there is also DH84 its predecessor and DH 86 is actually 4 engined plane and this Dragon Rapide bears the number DH89....sorry about the erratic topic.
Here is a Rapide in service with BEA in 1955, I think, flying from Penzance to the Scilly Isles off the West coast of England. G-AGSH is still flying in private hands last time I checked.
Between 1997 and 1999 it visited the Moth Club annual get together at Woburn Abbey, still painted in BEA colors of silver with red trim, owned by Phil Meeson.
I have a question for professional pilots and all able;
How come Dragon Rapide has only one set of controls ?
Since when and why did two set of controls become compulsory for airliners and the pilot + co-pilot combo ?
Jus to let you know G-AGSH the Rapide is owned by my dad Philip Meeson and is very happily still flying. It was fully restored (taking 3 years) 10 years ago and has been moved from Bournemouth's museum to the Shuttleworth collection in Bedfordshire. I am not normally a member of this forum but joined because I'm sure my dad would appreciated me keeping fans updated about her whereabouts!
It did used to be red and white before it was restored- see pics
