  • Tomorrow's Racers

    Hi all,

After reading through some recent posts, I've decided to pose these questions.

    Who will be tomorrow's racers?

And where will they come from?

        Pilots is this case.

And I am thinking more in the lines of Unlimited Class Pilots. I think that it takes a special kind of pilot to zip around the pylons at 450+. Who will they be? Who are the young guns that will fill the seats of the likes of Skip, John, Lyle, 'Tiger' Bill, and the many others that race.

So, instead of " hey Dad, can I borrow the car?" it'll be "hey Dad, can I borrow the P-51 Mustang?"

Yet more proof that I was born into the wrong family.

I hope to be one of tomorrow's racers.I'm working on getting my pilots license right now and if things go well,I hope to atempt go to PRS in 2009.I'm going to start in Biplane class and with time and money work up to faster classes.I'm 26 and have been designing(in my mind) an unlimited racer since I was 17.This will be my 15th year at Reno and my only goal in life is to win an unlimited championship.

                            Re: Tomorrow's Racers

With the high and increasing dangers of racing (due to increasing speed pushing pilots with higher G- loads) is there a case for having unmanned aircraft competing. From the spectators point of view there would be no obvious difference except the relief when an aircraft crashes that no one was hurt.
Aircraft could be controlled from the ground by radio and with AI control as a backup in case of interference. Video and Telemetry in the aircraft could be shared for spectator displays as well.
Speeds would rise and the course could be made more interesting due to no G-force blackouts to worry about.

There will always be the case for having pilots in the aircraft as it is fun to race, but air racing could be a much more common occurrence if we were not limited by the shrinking number of top pilots with the ability and desire to race.

I could see this as a good idea if they were racing Predators, but a mill and a half mustang...

                              Hey, Predator racing-sounds cool!
