  • Red Yak-(3?) spotted going south...

Somewhere between 2 and 4 pm today, I head a big, louder-than-usual radial, ran outside, and saw what definitely looked like a red Yak-3 passing directly overhead, zooming due south over Mountain View (south San Francisco Bay Area, Calif.).

Anyone know anything about? Who owns a red Yak warbird?

        Allison? No, I...DOH!

I apologise. I meant a red Yak-11. Forgive the brain-fart. As I get closer to 50, they seem to occur more frequently...

It was definitely a radial (both my eyes AND ears told me that), and it had that highly-tapered wing planform that is unique to the Yak-11, like the one in this photo:

WAYNE, any way to change the title of this thread from "Yak-3" to "Yak-11" please?

          AD,
Yak-3 would be correct for the radial engined 'U' model, and the wings are also almost identical...

We'll postpone the flogging, until another time

                        Right color, wrong engine-type.

I can't say the plane I spotted was SOLID red, as it flew directly overhead, so I never saw the sides or top areas of the plane. The upper portion could be yellow polka-dots as far as I know...

But everything I could see was a deep, dark red, like the Stoli MIGs.

                        .

May be I´m contributing more to the mess, but in this web site in HOME Archived Reports there is a page titled "Holbrook Maslin Damages YAK during Landing".There are pictures of a red radial engine YAK. Perhaps it is flying again, I don´t know.

A yak is a yak is a yak to me!
I do a file search and the brain pops up all kinds of stuff.
Maybe Will has been posting pictures of the new Sreadfast scheme as a smokescreen and it's actually some gaudy red scheme?
                            Has Maniyak returned?

No trickery here. I'm not familiar with a red model 11 or(3U) around these parts. Did Jims get some red paint over the Lexus white?
