  • possibilty and cost of a flight in a mustang?

    Hi guys
does anyone know whether its possible to buy a ride in a mustang or a Sea Fury -and if so approximately how much does it cost? I ask because I am planning to come to USA next year ( fortieth birthday trip ) to watch reno and have a look about - the nearest thing we can get to a mustang here in England is a ride in a harvard ( Texan)
    cheers Simon

I know a guy that just got back from somewhere in Arizona (not sure exactly where) but he said a Airport he landed at had a Mustang that was giving rides for $600 for I think it was either a 30 minute ride or An hour. I was pumping fuel in his plane.. couldn't hear everything he said do to the pump noise.

Go to planesoffame.com and you should be able to navigate a contact address or phone number to the museum at Chino. $600 for a 1/2 hr sounds about right, my how things have changed.

        Good luck

I am pretty sure that we paid $750 for a ride with Planes of Fame at Reno in 2006. It was a last minute impulse so mabey it cost a little more. But.... It is a write off! You pay a $750 DONATION to Planes of Fame and you get a 30 minute ride in a mustang. Not sure if you can reserve a ride or not before Reno. But if you can't, just go down to the Planes of Fame pits and they will set you up. Just check with them Wed, Thurs, or Friday to make sure they have an opening.
P.s. If you are sure you don't get air sick.... let the pilot know and he will show you a little more of what the plane can do!!

POF offers member sponsored flights (officially, they aren't rides, but you can ride along). Base cost for members is $715 for a Mustang flight. If you're not a member, add $50 to that for membership. To schedule a flight, call the museum at 909-597-3722.

Re: possibilty and cost of a flight in a mustang?

There are a lot of places that you can get a ride in a Mustang. The 3 that come to mind are:

                1) Planes of fame: http://planesoffame.org/

                2) Dixie wing of the CAF: http://www.dixiewing.org/

                3) Stallion 51: http://stallion51.com/

They vary in price quite a bit, so do your homework on exactly what you want to get out of the flight.

There are several other museums that offer rides, but I can't think of them at the moment.

Also the key thing here is that he will be at Reno.
I went for a ride with Dan Vance ( http://www.pbase.com/marauder61/ride_in_a_mustang ) in Speedball Alice at Reno a few years back. He and someone from POF usually do that at the end of each day at the races. Last year they were $750.

Probably important to reiterate that these guys don't "sell" rides. Usually, the airplane will be part of a non-profit, or museum, dedicated to the preservation of the historic aircraft.

Rather, you sponsor a flight to further that preservation so others can experience the sight, sound and the spirit of flight and history these classics represent; for doing so, you are allowed the honor of going along on that flight.

Re: possibilty and cost of a flight in a mustang?

Something that has not been touched on here is the "who" you take your ride with, and what airplane.

There are a lot of people that will give a ride in a P-51, but you should also consider safety and experience of the pilot.

Most of the guys that fly at Reno are at the top of the game in terms of the safety aspect. So are the airplanes. However, there are a few I wouldn't send my dad up with.

Dan Vance, Chino Planes of Fame, Stallion 51, and people like the Seghetti's, Brent Hisey and Robbie Patterson are people I would have absolutely no problem sending my dad up with (let along go flying with them myself).

If you choose to fly at Reno, that can be a really great time. Lots of airspace and usually good weather. The airport does get busy after the races are over for the day, but that's ok. The airplanes I listed here are all stockers, so they don't have any major race preparations to worry about.

                        Hope this helps.

You got that right Bill - closest thing to a Spit I'm ever going to sit in !
its got 27 litres of the finest sounding aero engine there is in the front!! what more could you ask for?

I'm trying to persuade my 75 year old father to come and have a ride As a boy he used to watch them fly over our farm in East Anglia on their way to be delivered to the fighter bases on the coast where they used to escort Fortresses to bomb Germany. We had an aerodrome called Chelveston about a mile away from the farm part of the 8th Army air force

I get to see 'Stangs once a year at the Goodwood Revival normally

I go partly for the planes and partly for the cars

                              Regards Paynts
