Lowell! I knew this one would get you out of hidin!

I emailed Don and told him of this thread.. man-o-man.. if we could get him to drop by! Year's ago, he emailed me about the site, so I know he visits, from time to time, at least.

        What a treasure Don is!

I don't know if Mr. Berliner called it "Volume I" but...

A couple air racing books by Don Berliner

            Unlimited Air Racers (Paperback)

Airplane Racing (Superwheels & Thrill Sports)

And a "FEW" other Aviation books that Don has written..

He is quite a prolific writer, very well known in the world of aviation writers.... That he's still at it is not only amazing, it's downright inspirational!

Very cool... just got permission to post Don's response to me and also he's now signed up on the board. We can look forward to something from Don soon!!

Looks like he could use some help with images.... *hint*hint*

              ***Don's response to this thread***

              Wayne,

Your posting has brought most of the missing Sport Class registrations, for which I thank you and your correspondents.

The questions about my Directory deserve an answer, so here goes:

In 1997, Volume I was published a firm that turned out to be amateurish and eventually corrupt, sad to say. About 1,000 copies were printed and I have no idea how many were sold, as I never received a penny in royalties. I blame myself for going with an unknown publisher, out of desperation.

Volume I covered every (I hope) airplane raced between 1909 and 1949 in major events, known trophy races, etc., which involved racing planes. It does not cover rallies such as the Powder Puff Derby, as they do not attract real racers, nor do they encourage speed-increasing modifications. There were 615 racers, with a photo of 90%+ of them, and basic specs and history of each.

As planned, I went ahead with Volume II which was being prepared for printing by a very talented friend who then ran out of time. I am in the process of bringing it up to date, and it now includes 965 airplanes that have raced since 1950:

              224 Unlimiteds
226 Formula Ones (USA and Europe)
              176 Sport and Racing Biplanes
              165 AT-6s
              41 Ladies' Stockplanes
              24 Formula Vs
              11 T-28s
              77 Sport Class
              21 Jets

It will take awhile to bring it up to date and to acquire publishable photos, but 'tis time. I'll keep you informed of my progress and my additional needs, soon to include a publisher I can rely on.

              Thanks again....

              Don

Excuse me Mr. Berliner for the time I´m stealing you.
I have a very good book of you: Unlimited Air Racers (it covers until 1991). I bought it here, in Argentina. Never knew if there is a second one that covers the next years on. The publisher was Motorbooks International,1992.
I really hope you have continued the history of unlimited air racers in another book. I would appreciate a lot you inform me if so it is.
                Thank you very much.

In viewing the Thunder Mustang web site it appears that there were two Thunder Mustangs that competed at Reno both running under the Race # 69. The blue & white of TM N58EE, and Steve Potter's Red & white N7TR that finished in 2nd place at the 2000 races.

Digging into an old thread, did Volume 2 ever get produced? Obviously at some point you'd have to cut off to make it.

There were two Lancair Legacys that used Race #21. The first was Dennis Stutes's Super Legacy N726DW and then Alan Crawford's Legacy N530AC.

                          Some guy named Morss.......

                          Reno 1997

That year was actually kind of cool because Dave ran the TM demonstrator, John Parker ran his Glassair III, and the Legacy ran (before being converted to turbine)....all Unlimited class entries. Sort of what pushed the Sport Class the following year.
