  • Allison in a Mustang racer?

    Hello Forum,

    Just out of curiosity, what would it take to install an Allison in Strega or Dago Red? With all the problems the Merlins are having, maybe its time to try an Allison. Joe Yancey builds a great Allison. Check out his work in tractor pulls and hydroplane racing.

      I asked the Late Great Ralph Payne that question before when word was out that Tony D' was putting an Allison in one of his Mustangs.

      The response was classic Ralph;

      A Merlin in a box is faster than an Allison in an airplane.

      The main problem that keeps an Allison out of winning in air racing is simple they don't have the supercharger for it.

      Now could you carry enough Nitrous Oxide to overcome that disability? What will be the next stumbling block?

        There have been a couple of past attempts to race an Allison in a Mustang. Heck, the first Mustangs had Allisons! For whatever reason no one has had much success doing that.

                  I believe there was a mustang owned by Tony Alisondro (sp?) that had an Allison engine. I remember that it was painted white, with dark (chacoal color) trim. He had it based in the Tucson area in the mid to late 70's. I saw it fly once, but I think at that time it had a Merlin.

                    Yeh, someone needs to buy that plane and race it to its gold potential. Like in '88. It hurts just to see her paraded around like that.

                      I believe the plane you're thinking of was the Mustang previously owned by Anthony D'Alessandris. It's now owned by Charles Osborne an is named "Shangri-La". Around 1990 it was owned by Rheinschild and was called "Miss-Fit".

                        While 88 was a fast year for PM, it was also the year she bellied in. Don't really want to see that repeated.

                          I don't think Ron B. would like you calling it that.

                            Just my $.02, but, unless it's in an A-model, putting an Allison in a mustang would be an injustice, a travesty, an outright faux pas!!! That's why they took them out in the first place. Compared to the Merlin, the Allison is a fat man running uphill to catch a streetcar!! They should all be put in boats. Out of 44 Unlimited Gold Championships, 20 were won by the Rolls Royce Merlin(45%). They can't win it every year. Why re-invent the wheel, stick with what works. They have had some hard luck the last few years, but they will be back in the winner's circle again very soon. MERLINS FOREVER!!
