  • PHX 500 95 ID ?

    Can you guys share some history about this Sea Fury?

    Dont know who owned it or who flew it.

    That was temporary, theoretically washable paint, applied for the races -- as a promotional deal, I guess. It was apparently much harder to remove than had been advertised. The airplane was later bought by Stew Dawson, and is now a fixture in the Gold race at Reno every September.

      Nelson Ezell flew it for Chuck Lesche, the owner at that time.

            I remember hearing it was a wax and have to wonder how you put color into it and even more importantly, how is it applied???

              At Chino we painted several aircraft for movies using MopnGlo tinted with regular paint tint bases from Home Depot. We did the Skyraiders used in Flight of the Intruder that way. You sprayed it from a paint gun.
              It was pretty durable if you stayed away from flying in the rain.
              It took some effort to remove but mostly just washed off with ammonia based cleaners.

                The P-40C that was restored at Chino several years ago was painted that way. It is up here with Paul Allen now, and the 'wax' still looks pretty darn good, even up close.
