Has anyone taken the public bus from Stead? How late do they leave? Is it recommended?

    Thanks,
    Jarrod

      Re: Public Transportation from Stead

The last two years I was at the Air Races at Reno (1990 - 91) I rode the Public transportation to and from Stead everyday...I got on the bus a couple of blocks from the Casino/Hotel at 6:30 am and got off at the (if I remember the name correctly) The Hard Times Tavern at Stead for breakfast and after a full day of Air Action and a few "cold ones" after the action, caught the 11:30 pm bus, at the corner by the Tavern, for the return trip back to Reno... It was very convenient, a little crowded, but not bad in the morning, but very roomy at night...and if I remember correctly once again, cost only a dollar or two each trip.... It was pretty cool, met some real air-racing personalities and such which added to the character of the "Reno Racing Experience"... rb

Just remember the bus takes 45 minutes to an hr to and from down town Reno to Stead.

All in all it really isnt that bad of a ride.

Depending on where you stay, you could hitch a ride with a like minded race fan.You can find them in the lobby or coffee-shop of your hotel. You will recognize them by the funny shirts they wear.
You could post a message on the bulletin board on the NAG Shack in the Pits, saying you were interested in sharing a ride. As others have posted, the local bus is not all that bad. It's almost an Expressrun, after you have left the downtown area.

My roommate Sue isn't quite as diehard of a race fan, so she often takes the city bus #7 to come out later or come back earlier than I do. The bus costs $1.70 each way, or 85 cents if age 60+. A 7-day pass is available for $19 ($9.50 senior). 10 ride pass costs $14.50 (7.65 senior). Exact fare is required on board. Passes are available various outlets. See below for the links.

The first bus leaves the downtown Reno area at 5:15 a.m. arriving at the intersection of Echo and Mt. Babcock (a few blocks from Stead) at 5:43. The last return leaves at 1:15 a.m., arriving downtown at 1:40 a.m. Saturday starts an hour later. Sundays and holidays start at 6:15 a.m., with the last bus starting back at 11:15 p.m.

Or of course, as Betty says, look for the funny shirts!
