My dad wanted me to write this. Shawn

The AIR RACES just arnt important to the locals here in Reno , as a result , some itms that have been submittted to RGJ.com/GET PUBLISHED will end up on their web site and not the Morning Paper.

The RGJ publishes "Cute" pictures of cute Kids, doing cute things that belong in the Family album, not in the morning news paper the "AIR RACING COMMUNITY" needs to pull together and log on to RGJ.com with your comments and prove toto the RGJ that there is interest in the AIR RACES and that the "RIB COOK OFF" is not THE BEST THING IN TOWN.

Hopefully, with the new publisher that will change.

      Re: RGJ.COM

Like I've said before, aviation fans are a minority in a major sense of the word. As fondly as we look at the races, to most people it's "planes is just planes...ain't no big thang"...

I have a few friends who are major monster truck fans, can recite the names of every driver and their rides in the Monster Jam events, and never miss a show. They think their chosen sport is the greatest thing ever, and simply cannot understand why everyone isn't into big, noisy 5-ton racing trucks.

If the local paper features kid-related photos and filler articles, perhaps that's because most people who read it HAVE families, and so have some personal interest in the topic. How many of those citizens own planes or are involved in aviation in any fashion?

It doesn't matter that the races are local to Reno either. The city is a major gambling mecca, yet so many residents have confessed that they never go to casinos. What chance would a once-a-year flying event have?

The only time you will see anything about the races in the gazette-journal is during race week, unless it's something the paper would consider newsworthy (like a serious crash during PRS, most likely with fatalities, unfortunately). Just as things appears to be with TV broadcast news programs, if it isn't bad aviation-related news, then it isn't news.

      Sad, but oh so true.

Heh-heh. San Jose (my area) has held Indycar races downtown for the last two seasons, and there are a few monster truck events nearby every year as well, but I haven't bothered to attend any of those events, nor care to.

Why not? ....Because to me, they ain't no big thang...
