  • Way off topic, but asked for...

Some of you have asked about my "real" job...

I work for the Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia.

Enclosed (if I can figure it out) are some pictures.

First my hats-off to Pluto's flag being at half-mast at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory down the road 6-7 miles.

Then a shot of 3 of the 5 engines in the shop getting ready for the season.

Then its me at the crankshaft end of an engine (19" stroke, 17" bore)

And finally a shot of some joker with a telescope hat.

    Now you know.

Too weird. I was reading a book in January about Pacific Northwest Logging and followed it up one night with some research about Climax & Shay locomotives. I had been to your website and read all about your engines. It's always a curiosity to me when something that big (a Pacific Coast-er) ends up clear across the country.

As soon as I remember the specific question I had about them, I'll get back to you.

        Thanks for sharing.

          Thanks for sharing,

The long process of restoring the Virginia and Truckee Railroad between Virginia City and Carson City is underway. They will be able to follow most of the original Right of Way. Recent progress has been made, fresh tracks now run South of Gold Hill to the American Flats. And work has been done on one of the tunnels. A guess puts the new trackage at about 2 miles, I'll post a link once I finnish scanning the photos and get them uploaded.

So far I've scanned over 1500 photos, with another 1000 or so to go.

Cool job Jerry! Do you know if those are water tube or fire tube boilers in the engines? Also whats the horse power of the boilers?

They are all fire-tube boilers. They aren't rated by HP though (like stationaly boilers) Just tractive effort.

                We have 3 superheaters (2,11,Big 6) and 4 saturated (4,5,Climax,Heisler).

I have pictures of the truck they moved 11 with from the Feather River in Washinton (state). 90 Tons of Mother Trucker
