  • Stick a fork in me

Monday I made a really tough decision, after being around the Rare Bear since I was nine years old, having played on it in the back alley of our condo when Lyle brought it home on a trailer, Having been involved with the engine program since I was 14 years old, even when I was involved on engine programs at Zeuschel's and Dwight's shops. I have had many talks with Dave Cornell, and after some heart searching have decided to remove myself from the Rare Bear crew. I waited in this announcement until I had talked with Dave Cornell, Bill Hickle, and Chris Rakestraw. I have other projects that are more important to me right now.

I wish Dave Cornell, Bill Hickle, The great group of mechanics that have been assembled over the last few years, and Rod Lewis the best of luck in their endeavors.

    signing off......

well, she figured out that jumping the start and cutting pylons didn't make her any faster - there's a lot of seconds to be gained right there!

Some of you may be interested in knowing that John - along with Steve Bartholf & Mike Wilton was the Team that built Dago's Mouse Motor in 03 that made short change of The BEAR on Fridays Heat Race on it's way to setting the Current Race and Fastest Lap Record.

Yeah, that was the 'sleeping with the enemy' year, wasn't it John? :-) I seem to recall Slack telling his dad that 'our tool box is bigger than yours', so don't try to break the equipment.

                  Danny, David,

The 2002 season was my first year working with Dwight Thorn on the Dago Red project and my pride of what we all accomplished with that 2002 – 2004 period of time is humbling. My working and personal relationships that were developed during this time are a highlight of my achievements in the sport, also I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to work with Bill Kerchenfaut during that time and develop that relationship even further.

                  2002 Fastest Qualifier @ 497.787
                  2002 Friday Gold 2A 1st @ 453.937
                  2002 Saturday Gold 3A 1st @ 468.561
                  2002 Sunday Gold Final 1st @ 466.834

                  2003 2nd Fastest Qualifier @ 492.722 behind Rare Bear, 1st Qualifier @ 495.039
                  2003 Friday Gold 2A 1st @ 507.105 (What’s that Stevie? Who are the ghosts?)
                  2003 Saturday Gold 3A 1st @ 480.415
                  2003Sunday Gold Final 1st @ 487.938

                  2004 Fastest Qualifier @ 490.821
                  2004 Friday Gold 2A 1st @ 477.417
                  2004 Saturday Gold 3A 1st @ 466.547
2004 Sunday Gold Final Finished 1st in front of Rare Bear, but penalized to second due to cut pylon. Rare Bear never made the attempt to pass as the pilot had seen the cut…………...

It was truly a privilege to work with Skip Holm during that time also, and I would love to do that again someday. There is something wonderful about Skip in his take to this sport, Once upon a time when I first met Skip and he was flying Jeannie he told me he had been out that morning riding a dirt bike around the course so that he could see it better. Oh' well another launch into the stratosphere from the nuthouse!

Yeah that was the exact quote, I wouldn't be specific but knew my Dad couldn't beat Dago That year and didn't want him to have the expense of trying, But you know Lyle he didn't beleive me.

There was a little asterisk next to it that led to a note on the back page, saying:

"...on the same old course but with a new method of timing that bumped everyone's average speed up."
