Wow! Did anyone catch the amazing video footage of Voodoo on Speed this morning? As I was getting ready for work, I turned on the tv and Motocross Files was on. The last 5 minutes had a bit about Buckwheat's adventures in 1998.

Great video, if I do say so myself.....

Dang! I KNEW I'd seen it somewhere before.

It was just a cool way to wake up. I was feeling kind of groggy up until that point.

Was this vid of when he lost part of his tail feathers?

          Yup.

Interesting editing, though. The pic of him pulling up is a far away shot taken from pylon 8 (in fact, I was standing next to Wayne when I shot it).

But then they spliced in a close up shot of Voodoo pulling up with my voice saying "Oh, looks like something just flew off the airplane". That shot was actually taken during qualifying while I was sitting in the grandstands, and he had a piece of the cowling or exhaust fly off just coming around the last pylon.

I guess I'm the only one that would know, but still....made me chuckle to myself.

I'd have to find it first....LOL.

The footage that Speed used they actually got from Bob and Terri. I guess when the film crew was there, they asked if there was any air racing footage, and Terri pulled out my "Bradfire" tapes that I had given them.

You're over in their neck of the woods, aren't you? You could probably go over to Buckwheat's place and watch it with him...get a 'colorful' narrative of what he was thinking! :-)

I dunno, Wayne...did you ever use/post any of my footage of that incident from that year?

So would I! Please not YouTube, my computer here blocks it.
Do you have footage of Smoot when he made that spectacular pull up on fire? VERY dramatic moment as we were all yelling "Pull up and get out!"

I think those are the only shorts I have ever seen him wear. Unless he has a drawer full of them.

I don't remember. That was the last year that I tried to take video AND shoot stills at the same time. Had both cameras around my neck, and was shifting back and forth. I think I followed Voodoo pulling out with the video camera, and 'heard' Sherm pull out. Might have some out of focus stuff with the fire (trying to find him in the sky with the video camera), but I quickly put the video camera down and started taking still photos. So I have stills of the fire and smoke, of him coming in to land and stuff (which is far away since I was out at #8), and then I turned round to shoot Buckwheat landing on 08 in front of me.

I'll try to check this weekend and see what I have.

I know I do have some pretty good 'recovery' shots of Czech Mate. I had to twist Kallio's arm, but I drug him along (at a quick trot...pretty good for a couple of old men) clear down to the other end of the field. There were only a couple other 'press' out there. O'Leary from Air Comix was there, and the Skyfire camera crews were there....and then there was me and Mark. Cool beans. Security was being pretty snotty about people being out there, as I remember. We had to be 'escorted' out to the runway over-run.

Continueing off topic, back in 03 when we first moved here, my wife ended up in line with Sherm Smoot at Scolari's in Lemmon Valley. She was buying air race shirts, him a cooler. She says she thought him another fan (shorts and sunglasses). After talking to him for awhile, she ended up offering him a loaner cooler. She thought him a real nice guy. She's been a Czech Mate fan since, tho she really dislikes the whole air race thing, just because of him.
