Hilton is probably the best, but it is more expensive.

I have made reservations (25 rooms) for Cascade Warbirds to stay at the Circus Circus for a number of years. We book through the sales department and get a good rate. They will pick you up at the airport, have plenty of parking, and the convenience of using your room key to charge meals at all the places in the three casinos is great.

Ahh... I see you used the newly designed "Off Topic" simile for this thread.. Actually, it's VERY on-topic!

Over the years, I've stayed at a number of places for Reno, from the absolute worst, which will go unmentioned! (as far east in Sparks as you can go and it REALLY sucked!) to some really nice digs!

For the last couple years, we've stayed at and have high praise of the Extended Stay America facility just south of Reno (seven miles south of the former Reno Hilton, now Grand Sierra)

It's out of the way, a bit, but you get a kitchen, fill fridge and all the good stuff that a mini-suite offers. Makes the stay more like a home away from home.

That said.. the new "Summit at the Grand Sierra" rooms are "condo" part time occupancy (only something like 20 days a year or so) by the owners and are in the rental pool the rest of the time and they are AWESOME!

They come at a premium to the rest of the rooms at the GSR (Grand Sierra Resort) but they are, in a word.. AWESOME!

The new owner of GSR is a big RENO supporter, a pilot and huge fan of the sport.

So from purely a "back the backers" point of view.. If there are rooms at the GSR and you can afford it. IT's where the racers stay (a lot anyway), it has the Pylon Bar and.. if YOU can afford it.. the Summit rooms!

Which.. did I mention are AWESOME!

Likely as not, BeerNazi and I will be out at Extended Stay again this year. But I'll tell ya for sure, if we could afford it, we'd be at the Summit Rooms! We did the tour there a few months ago. They have a pretty different offering.. You buy your room, get to stay there (by Reno city ordinance) for only a few days a year, and then it goes into the premium rental pool for rooms at the new concept Grand Sierra Resort.

New owner has pretty big plans for not only his resort, but for the entire area as a whole!

Reno, truly is a much nicer place than Vegas, it's always played "second fiddle" to Nevada's biggest city, Las Vegas. Reno has, better climate, it's much less over populated (though, it's got its own share of growth problems) and it's just plain in a beautiful area of the world.. And, not to forget, it's got AIR RACING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway.. there's lots of nice places to stay at Reno. Hope you book early enough and can afford whatever your heart desires!

              See ya in the pits!

So does the Pylon Bar survive, despite the stories of its imminent demise after last year's races?

                  Alive and well!

And since the current owner is a race fan and supporter, I suspect, this will seal the fate of the pylon bar, forever.

Maybe not in its exact current location... But I'd bet, it'll be around for a while to come...

Excellent news. Note to self - must remember to pop in there for a beer in September.
