  • Air Racing and Charlie's Angels

Well if you are done discussing bad acting these days, let talk about it in the old days:

What do Charlie's Angels and the Reno Air Races have in common?

Well in 1978 threre was an Angels (Cheryl Ladd version) episode that has some very brief but intersting shots of Reno (I can only assume from 1977 or 1978) from what I could see (please verify or confirm):

    - A very brief shot of an unlimited race that shows a Bearcat passing the home pylon rather low. Plane is light in color with a red or black nose and two dark stripes on each wing tip. (any ideas?)

    - A good shot of what is clearly Conquest 1 (bare metal) being towed down the main street of Reno with someone sitting on the cowl (the pilot?). The plane has banners on it, the winner maybe?

    - A pretty good (and very brief) in plane shot of a T6 race that morphs into an unlimited race with what appears to be the same Bearcat in the first shot.

    Other non-racing stuff:

    - An interesting flyover of Stead showing a very clear shot of a large hanger with the word LEARENO on the roof, a DC3 parked in front and a bunch of what look like KingAirs(!?) (definately not learjets) parked in back. The flyover shows the pits (in two lines, one facing towards the course, the other the oposite) but you cannot pick out planes.

    - Lots of Steerman shots doing what can only be described as a rather lame acrobatic demonstration, then landing at an airport that is definately not Reno, certainly somewhere in SoCal, maybe Flabob (some small hills close in the background)

The episode was just on a local channel.

Maybe Reno and bad acting just go together.

or Steal the Sky (ever wonder why some of those fuel trucks over by Classic Aviation had Israeli and Syrian markings?) Good Mig flying scenes though, courtesy of Rick Vandam and others . Mariel Hemingway as eye candy - nobody looks better with a slight bead of perspiration and a thin cotton dress than she.

That same shot was used in a television commercial back in the '80's by the Reno Convention Bureau for their "Reno, Reno" campaign. At the time I was convinced it was Slovak in Bill Stead's Bearcat (because of the paint scheme...which is all white with some red trim), but it could be Miss Priss in bad light.
