  • Flying solo, too!!!

Well, today is my 16th birthday, and I flew solo! Ironically enough, I still have to wait 3 months before I can get my drivers license, but I already have my student pilot license. Here are some pictures:

The wind was a pretty strong crosswind, which is why I landed like this.

Now, if I could only convince Jimmy....

Congrats! I still have the '46 Champ that I soloed about a month after my 16th birthday. It's been in our family for 45 years.

The C-3 was owned by my great-grandfather back in '32, and we managed to get it back in the 70's.

                Ryan,
Congratulations. A Cub and a C-3, very cool.
Didn't your Dad get to solo Cloud Dancer at 16 or so? Are you admitting his "negotiating" skills are better than yours?
                Best wishes and blue skies,
                Chris

Well, he was almost 17, and had 200 hours in a T-6, which I dont. Plus, P-51's were alot cheaper back then than now.

                    Ryan,
I hope you took my comments as simple teasing. To be sincere, I'm jealous; I soloed (1977) in a virtually new Cessna 152. Let's see, Cessna vs. Cub and C-3... ...Yup, Cub and C-3 win every time.
Years ago, one of the local pilots had rebuilt a Cub with his teenage son. After completion, the Cub was given to the son. One of the local old-timers made a comment like, "There ought to be a law against that; such a young guy with a Cub." I said, "No, there ought to be law requiring that."
I do think you should add some race numbers to the Cub and C-3. For the Cub, how about 1/9th and for the C-3, 1/99th?
                    Blue skies,
                    Chris

Congratulations Ryan. What a great venue, and two great airplanes.

On my 16th birthday I went down to the DMV and got my driver's license, then out to the airport to solo. Winds were bad that day, so I soloed a couple days later. Interesting coincidence, my father had the Cub in which I soloed, and an Aeronca C-2, but it wasn't flyable in those days.
                          No pixels were harmed, honest.
