The D model was restored to airworthy, but I think has been down for a couple years due to engine problems. Maybe Goss will chime in with the whole story.

There were actually three Bardahl race Mustangs.

Bardahl Special, raced by Bob Love and Chuck Lyford between 1964 and 1967 is now Doug Driscoll's "Section Eight" (which was on display in the Heritage area this year).

Bardahl Miss (1968), which was E.D. Weiner's #49 pylon racer, was restored to military stock. Last I heard it was based in France.

Bardahl II, E.D.'s cross-country racer, which won the '68 Transcon race, was restored to it's 1965-67 black and white checkerboard paint scheme by Goshawk Aviation in Arizona. They are still the caretakers of this plane.

Both of E.D.'s planes were only sponsored by Bardahl for 1968.

for about a year (around 2001) Bardahl II was based at Burbank Airport along with Frank Kohler's T-6G.

The second Miss Bardall is back in the US.
It is at Glenn Wegman's Florida shop right now.
It is painted in psuedo WW2 markings.

In the second link, there is a purple mustang in the background of one of the pics (number 64). Anyone know any history on this one?

Of course...that is the great Fey Racy's #64 "Purple People Eater" (aka: California Airmotive, Omni Aviation Special, Miss Santa Barbara, Miss Lois Jean). Originally owned by Jack Conroy, Clay Lacy raced this plane from 1964 through 1972. Clay eventually bought the plane in the mid-60's, and won the 1970 Reno race with it. It was the first Mustang to win at Reno.

Clay still owns this and keeps it at Clay Lacy Aviation in Van Nuys, though it rarely gets flown anymore.

That photo looks like it was taken at the '65 or '66 Lancaster races.

                            Fey Racy?
Someone remembers "the colonel goes air racing".
Did't Lacy bring the purple beast to Reno in the early eighties but did'nt qualify?
