  • New Spam Method

Those of you who subscribe to various subjects on the board are probably aware of the latest little underhanded trick by the SPAMMERS of the world..

Even though we do not allow unregistered posts until after they are "moderated" and approved, I believe that those who have subscribed to any subject which is replied to with one of the latest "SPAM" messages will get an email notification of this message. I'm not totally sure you do get them, however, I do and have made the assumption that others do as well..

I've checked into blocking the IP addresses of the SPAMMERS, but, they are using a different one each time so it's impossible to keep up with them.

For now, we'll just bear with it, cull them from the moderated queue and hope nobody but the moderators are getting the emails...

Every time I read one of these messages I ask myself "WHY?!" do they send them. Does anyone ever respond to them? Aren't they just a nuisance that we all try to ignore? I don't get it!

Wayne on www.teamsteadfast.com, we have LOTS of "REGISTERED Members" who I believe are just spam. It's like 80 of 100.

      Re: New Spam Method

A lot of the forums, including phpbb have spammers and auto bots to sign up. Gets to be a pain to administer.

Will, you can set it to make sure they enter the text from an image to verify when signing up or make the admin approve all memberships.

        Michael,

Yep, got that feature enabled here (I think ) The SPAMMERS are not acutally trying to join, except in rare cases, they are just stuffing my inbox (as well as the other moderators and, hopefully, not those subscribed to threads) with their junk.

I have had a couple who actually have gotten as far as joining to promote their "thing" but managed to get in and block them before too much junk flowed through the system.

I'm still mystified how they make any $$ off their efforts and if they don't, what's the pot at the end of their rainbow and why oh why do they bother??

I wonder that also Wayne, tho my dad used to sell insurance and used an auto-dialer to solicit. His theory was it was worth it to annoy 500 people on the chance that one would actually respond. I probably get 30-40 a day in my filter at work every day, from drug adds, porn and mail-order brides to mortgages.
