Re: B25 on Discovery Channel last week - MotoArt - WingNuts COOL!

(....Notice the large bottom shot photo of VooDoo in the Moto Art office?...I was wondering why they had it there...)

I've been watching Wingnuts since it's first episode weeks ago, and I've really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, Moto Arts wares are a bit pricey for my wallet.....I noticed that most of their customers on TV are successful businessmen. I LOVE the 6-blade WWII club prop on the workshop wall, but the website says it's $30,000....Just cannot afford a room decoration like that.

Check out Moto Art's website....They have some sweet items available.....Really beautiful stuff! I just gotta win the lottery, because I'd love to help support their business (one continuing subject of the show is their constant lack of money).

(You can see the club prop by clicking the GALLERY link and then clicking on SCULPTURES)

On a sad note, one of the cast members, Tim Roberts, just passed away...... He really added character to the show, and will be missed.

OT....That makes 3 people on 3 new discovery programs in the last few months (Indian Larry on Biker build-off, Mike Tata on American Casino, and now Tim on Wingnuts).....Is the Discovery channel jinxed?

Man - that is sad. Yes - he really added 'color' and I am sure greatly missed. That Club Prop is awesome and I am sure worth good money for use too. I know the shot of Voodoo is up there and other Reno posters. Please have your friends watch!

I really enjoy watching those building shows on Discovery Channel. I just started watching Wing Nuts a couple of weeks ago and it is now on my "must not miss" list of shows.

American Casino, Wing Nuts, American Hot Rod, American Chopper. I love them all.

Kind of morbid, but anybody know what happened to Tim Robbins? He was only 39 which is way too young to pass on. He seemed like he had some emotional problems, hope that didn't contribute.

According to newspaper reports, he died of natural causes, but more tests were going to be conducted.

I've read text that stated that he had an enlarged heart, but I don't think it's official.

There's a write-up about the tragedy at the following website.....I'll just post a link for those who wish to read it, rather than post the details in here.

            ================================================== =

There's also a discussion going on at the official Discovery Channel forum on this topic.

Be forewarned, there's a few losers who didn't like him, and voiced their opinions there in what I would call an immature and low-class manner. I'm sure glad people like that don't post here in this forum.

                I love the fact that these guys are saving these Planes in a way that allows many to own and cheerish within families and possibly generations. I know they (MotoArt) have for years supported RENO Air Racing and many other venues that we all attend. I noticed that their air-dates are looking spotty and without Tim (God rest his sole) I want to support them. I know Wayne has built a great community here and I love the fact that he allows us to speak our mind, so, I am supporting the MotoArt gang and if you would like it is just an email away;

This is the site that Discovery offers as a communication tool. I gotta figure out this registration process. Wayne - great site.

Re: B25 on Discovery Channel last week - MotoArt - WingNuts COOL!

The two guys (forget the names at the moment) who started Moto-Art have been down at Nellis for both years wev'e been there. They do a really neat thing on arrival day and on the last day (as well as others) after the flying is done and the crowd leaves, they bring out the motobar and we have some fun out on the ramp.

A great pair of guys! If they are there again this year, I'll ask how the show is going and see if there is anything we can do to help it along with a letter campaign.

I'd still like to see one of these shows maybe done more like the bike build off, where it covers more than one team but goes in and "lives" with race teams. The boys in the Rare Bear team were joking about it at PRS... "American Air Racing" or something like that..

If only someone could have taken the time to totally document their quest for the gold! I did the best I could with stills, took as many shots as I could and then had to miss the culmination of the great quest this year... **Sigh**

It happened right under all of our noses and I don't know if everyone actually realizes that the Rare Bear story over the last several years, is one of the great stories in all of air racing in all time! Kind of rising out of the dust and slapping the giant down.. Foggy canopy or whatever.. the Bear is back and was so close to melting down Dago in 2003's race that it's not funny. Had John not had to back off, '04 might well have been the second win in their new era of dominance... if that's how it works out..

Anyway.. wandering off topic here, I'm tired and medicated, so I guess that's a good excuse! Getting the flu on top of everything else Iv'e been going through is not a ton of fun I'll tell ya!!!!!!!

                    MotoArt - WingNuts not cool!

No offense intended here but... I hate this show, it's my least favorite on TV right now. I appreciate anyone who supports Air Racing but do not appreciate what they do to precious aircraft parts. I wouldn't be happy with anything but the return of these parts to flyable aircraft. I understand that sometimes a part cannot be returned to working order, i.e. prop blades and think that using them for a coat rack is novel, but taking NOS parts and turning them into coffee table makes my blood boil. Most aviation nuts go crazy at the thought of P-47's and B-26's being turned into scrap after the war, replacement parts for which are now "unobtainable". Isn't this kind of short sighted? How many people kept original Dr-1, Ki-35, and B-25 parts as a conversation pieces. Would they still have taken them if they new that some of these planes wouldn't even exist in 30 years?

I don't believe they are destroying anything here. Most of the things I have seen were on the way to be melted down. If given the choice between a neat DC-9 table and a Toyota fender, I pick the table.

If they are destroying parts that are needed to keep aircaft flying, I would not watch. I do not believe that is correct.

I think you're right here, the only parts I've seen them use that would raise a question would be the B-25 elevator table. I don't know if those are in shortage, or are there tons of them, or are they usable on the airplanes without substantial rebuild anyway?

I suspect, if there were a shortage, or if the parts were very rare, as close to the bone these guys are with their dollars, I doubt they could afford them.

Other things they use are purely ready for the smelter and thank god there will be some individual parts, at least, of some of these things so we can remember them.

I never was that fond of the DC-9 anyway, but it's nice to know that someone is making something of use out of the ones that are headed for beer cans.

I'll actually ask them if there is any issue with that stuff if they are at Nellis again this year. They are both really nice guys, unless fame has gone to their heads

Add me to the list of haters of this show.....Here's my flame on it from the Wix Board from earlier this week...(and I didn't know that Tim had died when I wrote this, I am sorry to hear that.)

I just got around to looking at the episode where they turn the B-25 part into a desk. (Although I didn't watch it long enough to see what happens at the end) An utterly horrible lame excuse for an hour of television this is. First off, I'm very unhappy to see valuable warbird parts turned into a desk and it just proceeded to anger me. Discarded 747 parts and DC-9s are fine with me, but not warbirds. The guys on the show are all your average backwards cap, goateed, tattooed, pot smoker "hey dude" types....15 minutes of this travesty was enough for me. Most of it has nothing to do with aviation anyway, just the day to day procedures of their business in the office. I never ever want to see this stupid show again.

I think a note should be added here. A B-25 restoration shop sold them the part(s). I would think that if the part was good and/or in short supply, he never would have sold that part to them.

                              John,
That's why your remote comes with a channel changing button (or if it is stuck, an on/off button). They bought the B-25 tail part from a warbird restorer (note the B-25 in the background). You would think that if the part was usable, the restorer wouldn't have let it go for any price. As for all the other planes, they are on their way to becoming hub caps, might as well make them into something useful.

As for the way the people dress/look...it's SoCal, dude. I find the show pretty entertaining. I really don't see what is shown on all these "reality" show as being what goes on 24/7...the stress of working for these outfits (ie: OCC, Coddington's Hot Rod, MotoArt) would send me to an early grave or up into a tower with a high powered rifle.
