  • Unusual pylon racer design

    I was skimming through a website belonging to a gentleman who designs and builds land speed record cars, and came across a concept design he had for a VERY unique air racer (He must be looking WAY ahead into the future....his design is turboprop-powered). I thought A few members might like to see it. He calls it "The Low Transonic Pylon Air Racer":

    It's just a concept, and he has no plans on making it (perhaps a good thing, as the large frontal area and small tailfins give me the impression of a very unstable aircraft, and his idea of the jet exhaust expelled through the prop to make it go faster doesn't make sense to me....Wouldn't doing so reduce prop efficency?))



    While you are there, you may want to look at his "Constitution LSRV" rocket-car he is working on. He seems to have manage to obtain several LR-99 rocket engines as used on the X-15 !!! Here's a link to the home page:

    I think a structure of that kind is not plausible. Propellor and impellor must be a fancy dream. Why is the wing tip wider than the root ?

    Inspiring to a degree.

      The only other aircraft with such wings that I'm aware of was the Republic XF-91 "Thunderceptor". The XF-91's unusual wing design was intended to reduce or eliminate tip stalls. It surely made for an unusual looking machine.


      In contrast to the usual practice, the swept wing was thicker and wider at the tip than it was at the roots. It was hoped that this unusual wing configuration would provide greater lift outboard and would reduce the tendency of the wingtips to stall at low speeds. In addition, it was expected that this innovation would reduce the amount of aerodynamic drag at the critical wing/fuselage junction.

        That is very interestin indeed.

        I may have done mistake in my TS2 when I designed the wingtip too narrow ( less than half on the root width ).

        Not that I wouldn't have been informed about the fact before hand by an aerodynamist in California.

        I am just a stupid finn trying to create something new I guess.

        Maybe I'll do a new wing for it soon, but not before I have tried a new more powerful engine on it.
