  • Red Bull Air Racing

I am curious if any of the European members have seen the Red Bull Air Racing live, and if so, what they thought about it. Of course it's not real air racing, but it does look interesting.
I have seen the little clip on the site, but am kind of curious as to what we will see in Reno this year.

U.S. Debut of Red Bull Air Race

The United States debut of the Red Bull Air Race will take place at Reno’s 2004 National Championship Air Races and Air Show from September 16-19. The new-to-the-U.S. race is more than just a test of your plane’s speed, according to organizers.

“It’s a style of racing that’s never been seen before in the U.S.,” said three-time U.S. Aerobatics Champion Kirby Chambliss. “We’re right up in your face.”

The eight-plane timed aerobatic competition requires pilots to navigate around air-filled pylons that rise nearly 60 feet off the ground and execute predetermined aerobatic maneuvers like a 360-degree vertical roll between obstacles. The pilot completing the course with the fastest time wins, but time penalties are incurred for dangerous flying or incomplete sections of the course.

Chambliss, who won the United Kingdom competition by 0.03 seconds, said the race should take just more than two minutes to complete.

Holy Pop-Tarts, Batman! That looks insane, but entertaining nonetheless.

            Re: Red Bull Air Racing

I read somewhere that there would be about six pilots at Reno.

Glad to see the Red Bull link posted. I would have done it, but I am computer challenged.

If you want a good laugh check out the clips of the flugtag events.

              Re: Red Bull Air Racing

Very interesting...needs a lot of practise for sure.

England this summer the FAF display team Midnight Hawks flew front of a 250 000 people crowd. Their diamond formation is flown with 1 metre distance from one another; crowds cheered.

              Everything is possible.

I don't know how fun it will be to watch. I'm not much into aerobatics but I like the military demonstrations like the F-16, F-18, and the F-14. I think I will stick to real air racing but I'll still watch it though.

Those Extras, Sukhois etc are really high performance planes - it would be interesting to see what they could do around the F-1 or T-6 course with racing-optimised propellers. Perhaps a new race class...

There was an extra raced in sport class last year. I think it was bronze class speed range if I remember correctly.

It was a Zivko Edge 540 (540T?), but in reponse to the previous poster, it would take more tahn an optimized prop to make a winner out of the aerobatic mounts. They often have fat wings with symetrical airfoils that work great for high G pulls and flying upside down, but they are definitely not the fastest for racing. The power to weight is typically great, and the frontal area is small due to tandem seating (or only one seat), but the wing will really slow you down.
