  • Yak 11 spotted In Spokane

Just missed the Sea Fury (:-( as he was taking off too far from me. I was working on an Alaska Airlines plane when I heard the distinctive growl of a 3350 on takeoff. The Yak is owned by Cascade Warbirds, registered NX25YK. Has a R1830? Based in the SEA area with EAA Warbird Squadron 2. I think it is here for the Fairchild AFB Air Show this weekend with the Thunderbirds. I will try to keep an eye out for anything else interesting. Maybe even catch the TB crossover and see if I can catch one of them with his speed brake deployed

Nope. I don't think this group is into the racing thing with "THEIR" aircraft. Although, their website, http://cascadewarbirds.org , does have an ad for R2k+4, so they certainly support them. That's all I know. I have not looked at the entry list, (nor do I even know if there is an official one yet)

Jarrod, it'd be pretty hard to mate that size engine to a YAK but... historians, correct me here... I think there is a Yak out there with a 3350 on her nose.. (Jack Frost's) it's got sort of a "checkered" history and had controlability issues early on... Back a few years ago, when we all were first starting out reporting on the races via the web, Mark Kallio wrote up this excellent report on the airplane click here

I'm glad yer hanging round gettin the "knowledge"

jarrod, jack frost owns two "frostbite" planes, one a t-6 the other is the 3350 powered yak.

Good question Jarrod, and one that most who follow the sport would love to know. I tried several times a few years ago to speak to Mr. Frost via phone. He never returned my calls.. (not a big surprise) and I finally gave up and figured, we'd see him when we see him..

It'd be great and will prolly just be one of those.. WOWW.. .. LOOK WHO'S HERE things some year..

He's an ag pilot out of the midwest somewhere.. pretty busy round Reno time..

                          Maybe someday...

You are right - Cascade Warbirds, Sq 2 of the EAA, out of Boeing field will be flying in the skies over Spokane Fri, Sat, and Sund as part of Fairchild's show. They will have a number of T-6's flying formation, many, if not all of the Fraser Blues, our Canadian friends in the Navions, A TBM in it's last appearance in the NW (She's on her way to Osh, as well as a number of the CWB's)We expect to have about 30 or more Warbirds there. ENJOY them. We enjoy "Keepin 'Em Flying".

On second thought, if the Yak isn't one of our three, it could be Sam Richardson's Yak. He has been one of our members in the past, and has raced at Reno.
