    Re: Crazyhorse?

That would be Larry Havens clipped wing, and all around modified P-63C. Unfortunately, on a test flight south of Long Beach, the induction blew apart and all control was lost, except for the rudder. Larry tried to control the aircraft with the throttle and elevator trim, but that would only "work" so well. Larry was forced to depart the aircraft over the Pacific. Larry was okay and picked up a short time later.

    Bummer eh?

      Re: Crazyhorse?

Do you mean the Crazyhorse Kampgrounds sponserod racer? It is a P-63 Kingcobra made up from parts of several Kingcobras from the Cleveland days. The project was started by Darryl Greenamyer in the mid sixties and then sold off to Larry Havens who had Pylon Air of Long Beach Ca finish the airplane. The resulting racer was still teething when it flew in the 1971 Reno races. It wasn't real fast but showed potential. The fastest it went was 369 in a ten lap race, so it wasn't what you would call slow, but needed additional sorting. It was upgraded and painted white with flat plate wing tips and a wide chord Aeroproducts prop, and had an induction explosion during a high power speed check on a test flight before Reno 1972. The detonating engine blew the induction sheet metal apart inside the fuselage and fouled the controls. Not enough control was available for a safe landing so Larry baled out over Long Beach Harbor. Its paperwork is on the Palm Springs Air Museum ship I believe.
