  • Mustang, T-28, & P&R R4360......

I just got back from a hanger over here in Elk Grove, CA that housed a P-51, AT-6, T-38, and an experimental racer with a 500 horse Chevy 350 for an engine. The Mustang, T-28, and AT-6 are all operational and fully restored. Also, inside this hanger, was a fully functional Pratt & Wittney R4360 (It really runs!!!). It is on a trailer with a huge frame supporting it. I would love to see this in a racer! I am pretty sure that this is the same engine that the Spruce Goose had except with 7 more. Out back was an 8000 horsepower radial that came in a C-133. I don't want to disclose thier names because they were both nice enough to let me finger and eyeball these magnifcant warbirds! Thanks again if they read this. Just thought I would share this with you guys.

There were also some other planes in this hanger but with planes like the P-51, T-28, and the AT-6, I was kind of sidetracked!!!

8000 horsepower radial, huh? Hmmmm.....two 4360's welded together?

But I thought the C-133's were turboprop.

Were you at Dick Magelian's? He has a mustang named "this is it" and one runable 4360 and three others out back?

Yep, the C-133 was a turboprop:

The P-51 Mustang " This is it" is owned by Richard Bjelland of Lodi Ca.

You do know that there are two actively competing air-racers with R-4360 power, I assume? Dreadnought and Furias both use P&W R-4360 engines grafted to a Sea Fury airframe. There is also a recently restored F2G Super Corsair on the airshow circuit these days. There's a picture of Dreadnought with her cowling open here: http://www.aafo.com/gallery/history/round/009.htm

The Spruce Goose did use 4360s, but they were very early models. The racers tend to use the ones from C-124 Globemasters.

Is it just me, or does the C133 look like some engineer finished the whole thing and then smacked his forehead and said, "Aw heck! I forgot the WING!"

                    I think it looks cool.

I'm not an engineer but I imagine they did it that way so the wing carry-through structure didn't enter the cargo area so the whole cargo hold was a uniform size. After all, they used it to transport Titan missiles and you can't scrunch the missile in the middle to fit under the wing box.

I've lived in Elk Grove, CA for 14 years and I didn't know there was such a place here... Can you say where, or did the owner ask you not to divulge his location info?

                      thanks,

The C-133 got pulled from service becasue of structural failures, go figure.

I used to love the three C-133's they had stored out at Mojave in the infield boneyard. If I remember right, they were supposed to be converted into huge flying hospitals and taken down into the Congo or something like that. World Relief Foundation, maybe? They got scrapped many years ago, though.

I always thought the -133 looked like a C-130 got put on the torturers rack and stretched out a bit. And then they stuck that damn radome off the C-124 on it to make it look like a clown.

Naw, they gave the C-130 a dose of Viagra, then put a resevoir-tip condominium on it!

Yes, I was out at Dick's place. That was my first time meeting him though. My best friend happens to be good friends with him and the gentlemen that owns the T-28 (they share the hanger). I have never met such nice people in my life!!! Like I said, they let me finger and eyeball the beauties in the hanger. The owner of the T-28 even let me get up inside of it and showed me everything about it....that was a really advanced trainer for it's time. Thanks again guys if you are reading, it really made my day!!! Dick was talking about the airport community that is planned to go out there. He said it would probaly be open for public use sometime this summer. Anyways, it looks like a really good plan.
