Is there any place in Reno that will rent lenses. I'm talking about the Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS. I can rent one here in Chicago for the week, but carrying a $3800 lense across the country that is not mine would not make it easy to sleep at night.

That's really a good question Tim. I know that Mark Kallio used to rent down in the bay area and bring it/them up but I've never been aware of a high end photography store in Reno.

http://www.dexonline.com/ might try that and plug in Reno and photography or photography stores and see if anything comes up.

You might also try some of the pawn shops in the area, you might be able to rent from one of them, if they happen to have what you need. Or, you might actually find something nice for sale cheap.

Thanks, as for finding one in a pawn shop, you never know, but I doubt it. The mentioned lense is generally known as one of the finest pieces of glass ever made. Most people who own them have them pried out of their cold dead hands.

Hummn.. ya never know, demon gamboling has been known to cloud the judgement of many!

Lucky me, I grew up down there so I hardly ever visit the casinos for more than a few drinks or a show.. I will almost always plan on buying a roll or two of quarters to donate to the Nevada fund but never beyond that..

Looking at the link for the dex pages site, I found a couple photo shops. Bout your best bet would be to contact them direct. I'm going to bet that nobody in Reno will have the glass you're wanting.

You could probably ship it to your hotel via FedEx with appropriate insurance on it, that might make you a bit more comfy?

Just out of curosity, what they gonna soak you to rent that bugger for a week?

One day is $60 (weekend also $60), and one week is $180. I doubt I will do it, just seeing if anybody knew anything. I will rent it to take some motorsports stuff, just to see what it is like. I have its little brother the 300 f/4L, but without the IS. If I go 10D, and stick a 1.4X on it, thats 672mm equivalent. Easy to bring camera shake into the picture without the IS.

I'm actually surprised that the rental is only that much for a week.

The problem with going really long at Reno is heat wave distortion. Not so much if you are shooting up but if you shoot across the ground very far, you'll get a lot of distortion.

I've got more than a few that would be good if not for the wave effect. It can be cool for video, especially if the subject gets clearer as it gets closer but the effect is lost with stills

So you're pretty sure you're going to go with the 10D? I'm going to dream about getting the Canon 1DmkII for a year or so until the price comes down or, my ship comes in

I sure wish the Nikon D2H had have been more of the camera that I thought it might be, though I've not used one, sample images I see do seem to lack something and seem pretty noisy. Especially when compaired to the 1DmkII samples I've seen. Making switch to Canon is going to be costly due to having to sell all my Nikon stuff at a loss but...

Anyway.. that's all still very much in dream territory for me, WAY into dream territory!

              Re: Lens rental

10D is all I can swing with a house to pay for now. Besides I'll be able to sell it for a decent price next April when the nice tax check comes back and hopefully get the 1DmkII. I figure it will cost about$2500 for the camera, grip with the extra batteries, 2 CF cards, and a digital wallet. I could sell my EOS 3 for probably $600, but I just can't part with such a great camera, even though I bought it used.

Now on the other hand I do have a 1991 C1500 that I race with a Vortech blown 355, but I can't really see myself parting ways with that toy either.

                What's a C1500?

Is that a chevy 1500 pickup?

                Also, what's a V 355? A punched 350?

Reason I ask, I drive a '97 Silverado, box stock 4x4 with the 350 Vortec and I love it..

Had an '89 Silverado before that, actually, I think I liked a lot about the '89 better than the '97 but the interior and stereo are a lot nicer on the '97.

Both are/were great road vehicles and not too bad off road or in the snow either when you grab that 4x handle and give it a pull!

But then, now I'm pulling this of topic aren't I...

Yep, its a Chevy shortbox Sport truck (looks like a 454SS but with a 350), I picked it up new in October of 1990, and it has been with me since. Only has about 60,000 miles , but I'm on the 2nd shortblock. The trans is blown right now. It runs mid 13's with a healthy trans. While not as fast as a certain forum members Mustang, there are plans to correct this in the future.

I'll have to post a pic, when I get time.

They are nice! My 4x4 runs down the highway at about 85mph with only a little over 2000 RPM showing on the tach and turns in about 17 mpg at that speed. My old '89 consistantly gave me 1mpg more... not sure what the gig is but my spedo is always about 1.5 mph slow.. so maybe that's it and I really am getting the same mpg.

Yea... do! My truck is pretty non-photogenic just a plain driver. Don't think I even have a shot of 'er...

Here is the beast, not a great pic,(look close and you see a Mustang!!! Ouch!!) I believe this is from 1996. Truck still looks the same except I put small body color mirrors on it, and I put the big old 5" Monster Tach on the dash.

Sounds like a blast but that poor puppy must have been run pretty hard, i have 60 + k on mine (bought new in 92) and other than many oil changes 4 exhaust systems (my solution is a 3 inch glass pack with a kick out just ahead of the right rear, still working after 5 years & VERY MELLO!!! ) 6 sets of tires (thats how hard i run it )and a new flywheel- & clutch, the teeth on the ring gear started shedding something horrible it has been awsome
The only time she let me down was just south of Longview Wa in 2000 at 2 am when the front bearing blew up on the alternator

I live here in Reno and have asked all over town if they will rent lenses or cameras. They all said no. They say the closest one is in the bay area. P.S. I miss my 94 ck2500, Silverado. Wrecked it last month and it was totaled. Mike G.

Knocking on wood!! The '97 so far has been *almost* problem free. The variable assist power steering is giving me a bit of a fit. It does not seem too able to tell whether or not it should be in the low speed, high assist mode or high speed, low assist.

If it stays in the high boost mode, it feels like I'm driving on ice, if it goes into the low boost mode, it sometimes tries to kick into the high boost mode and feels like I'm on ice... usually a bit unnerving...

The old '89 never gave me a stich of trouble other than rotting out the tailpipes behind the muffler... (quickk and cheap to fix)...

The old '89 went almost 100k and never even had a door ding! (amazing what running boards do for keeping doors off a vehicle!) I bought the '97 with a shopping cart ding (deep) on the right front fender.. still unfixed...

Just turned over 40k on the '97. Gotta love Chevrolet trucks!
