  • Best Hotels In Reno ?

Hey guys. I know this has probably been asked here before, but I ran a couple of searches with no results.

My mom and I are wanting to go to Reno this September for the air races, and we were just wondering of a nice place to stay that is somewhat close to the airfield. We don't need anything fancy since we'll just be sleeping there, but we would still like something respectable. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Re: Best place to stay?

Hotel-wise there is nothing at Stead. The closest would be in Reno. The options are many as are the prices. The benefit to going with the larger name casinos / hotels is that most have some sort of shuttle service (the traffic can be somewhat daunting).
There is RV parking at Stead and a few miles away at Bordertown.
Although I camped at the airport for years, past experience says start booking now.
Some of the other poster's here may have specific hotels they can recommend.

      Re: Best place to stay?

      What Leo said.

I would say just stay in Reno, it's only a 30 minute drive to Stead from downtown (Sunday after the races is the worst traffic jam but if you can leave on 395 North, it's not too bad).

Reno has everything from a Motel 6 style motel to a spa suite at the Hilton.

I have always liked to stay at the Silver Legacy. It's downtown, directly connected to two other hotels/casinos (Circus Circus and Eldorado) and close to just about everything you would want to see when not out at the races. "Regular" SL rooms during the races range from $69 on Thursday to ~159 on Sunday...depends on what they have available.

Reserve now...If you wait until mid May or so and the nicer hotels are filled up.

      My 2 cents

My wife and I have been staying at the Peppermill for the last several years. They don't have the cheapest rooms but they are very nice and there are several places to eat in and around the casino. We also like it because it's NOT downtown. There's very little traffic once you get off the freeway and parking has never been a problem there.

As far as the shuttle bus goes, last year they were charging $8 per person each way per day. We got a rental car for less than the bus fair for 3 people (including the parking fees at Stead). Where ever you decide to stay BOOK YOUR ROOM NOW! I make reservations for the next year's race as I'm checking out.

Circus Circus is decent. You have access to several restaurants and places to hang out (drink) later in the evening.

Holiday Inn, is of course, the Holiday Inn.

What use to be the MGM Grand and is now the Hilton is very nice with plenty of restaurants and entertainment.

All of these are pricey for air race fans. Considering that most of us spend a great deal of our time at the races.

There is one that I would steer clear of. It use to be called the All Star, and it has changed owners a few times and is now a Motel 6. Or as some of us that have stayed there, we call it the BATES MOTEL!

I would stay at the Reno Hilton. It is the place to see and be seen during the races. Most of the teams stay there as well as the pilots.

I'd be a bad boy if I didn't mention that the Silver Club in Sparks helps out the Rare Bear team so it is for sure an option. The rooms are pretty basic but it's got easy freeway access and is cheap.

That said, if you can afford it and can book a room there, I totally agree with Alaskaracer. The Reno Hilton is pretty much the off course "Air Race HQ" at Reno.

They have the Pylon Bar with an actual racer or two hanging from the ceiling, several models, photos and more. There is an absolutely great bar with live music there called "the garage". Lots of racers stay there, it's a great place to meet people and have a good time.

Sparks Nugget is also a good option.

All of this is with the caveat, *if* you are not too late to book a room!

                Re: Best place to stay?

Sparks is definately easier to get around in. Nugget and Silver Club have Victoria Square with all its bars and casino's there also.

Ahh.... bummer that you can't make it. I think that things are shaping up this year to be VERY INTERESTING!! (we're digging, news will come as we get it and get *approval* to make it news )

On the Reno Sparks deal... Though it is a bit further, in the past, I've actually stayed up at Lake Tahoe and made the drive down. Not the best way to do it if you're going to plan on being there for several days but. If you have a better half that is reluctant to go for the week... A good plan is to book at Tahoe in a nice place, let her/him play around up there some of the time while you go play with the airplanes!

A bit of a drive but nice views... Just another alternative.. Carson City is also an alt if all else fails.

                      Re: Best place to stay?

Well, if we're giving alternates, I stayed in Susanville one year (1999 I think) because I waited too long to make reservations. It's only an hour away (depending on how fast you drive) and there is very little traffic going north out of Stead.

No matter where you stay, get with your travel agent or get on-line and book NOW!

The Super 8 at 1651 North Virginia across from Fleischman Planetarium. Good prices, clean, very convenient, a little busy if UNR has their home coming at the same time.
Its walking to two fine eateries, the Little Waldorf saloon and Archie's (a must for breakfast). THey have a little store and there's a 7-11 right there too.

Of course, I encourage you to stay at any hotel that sponsors the racers or their classes.
